Description

*Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
*Vintage production: 636 cases

*Owners Ron and Susan Krausz purchased their Estate in 1997 after falling in love with the property’s rugged beauty and natural setting among the forests of Howell Mountain.

They adored the profile of the Cabernet from the steep, eastern volcanic slopes of Napa, and they began to explore further south in the Vaca Mountain Range for additional sources of outstanding fruit.

This led to the birth of their NVD (‘Napa Valley Designate’) label – a remarkable expression Mountain Cabernet.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Decanter 96

Sourced from Arkenstone Vineyard, Heimark Vineyard, Amoenus Vineyard and Godward Vineyard, this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. Impressively bright and vivid in this vintage, it shows charismatic, crunchy red fruit character layered with lovely graphite minerality and subtle, fragrant nuances of tobacco spice. The tannins are impressively crisp on the medium-bodied palate, while the fruit profile builds with black cherry and blueberry notes, joined by hints of pine-forest and cocoa-nib freshness. Long and lingering, the finish is energising. [Jonathan Cristaldi, 18/03/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2040

The Wine Palate 97

The 2023 NVD Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it sings of beautiful fresh black currants, red currant jelly, and kirsch notes, followed by hints of roses, underbrush, and fragrant soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegant and refreshing with very fine-grained tannins and compelling tension, finishing long and perfumed. [Jonathan Cristaldi, 01/11/2025]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2045

2023 Arkenstone, Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Howell Mountain 1x75cl

DE97JS98TWP98
*Blend: 93% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Sémillon *Vintage production: 229 cases *Equal to the Estate Red, the Estate Sauvignon Blanc is done in the Bordeaux style of winemaking, including a small... percentage of Sémillon in the final blend. As with many Bordeaux Châteaux, Arkenstone utilises large concrete eggs for the vinification as well as new and once-used French oak. The free-run Sauvignon Blanc is fermented and aged in oak and concrete vessels for roughly a year sur-lie and without racking or battonage. The Semillon is fermented and aged sur-lie for the same time but in all-new French oak. Once blended, the Estate Blanc is then aged in bottle for 18 months before release. The Wine Balance, structure, and texture are at the core of the Estate Blanc. This foundation makes it quite versatile at the dinner table. From raw seafood to hearty pork dishes, the combination of rich fruit and bright acidity makes it a perfect match. Though easy to enjoy, the Estate Blanc is more intellectual than it is quaffable. Whereas most Sauvignon Blanc blends are meant to be enjoyed for the prelude to an evening, Arkenstone’s has the integrity to last from amuse-bouche to the final dessert of a lengthy meal. Howell Mountain is composed primarily of volcanic soils. At Arkenstone, the vines are planted in red Aiken Loam and White Tufa. The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are planted in the Tufa, comprised of compacted volcanic ash, and are 100% organically grown.

Arkenstone Estate is perched high on the west-facing slopes of Howell Mountain. It’s a breathtaking property that has been farmed organically since day one, and you’ll find Sam in the vineyard tending to vines as often as in the cellar. 2021 Arkenstone, Estate Syrah, Howell Mountain 1x75cl

DE98TWP97
*Blend: 100% Syrah *Vintage production: 117 cases *By far their smallest production wine, the Estate Syrah is an Arkenstone team favourite inspired by the Krausz family’s love of hillside Syrah. ... It has long been one of Napa's hidden gems. Grown on two separate vineyard blocks including one of the steepest on the Estate, the Syrah has found its sweet spot on Howell Mountain. The original plantings of the first block happened in 1998 consisting of 0.2 hectares. What started as an educated guess after looking at soils and exposure was quickly confirmed a few years after that first leaf. The team then added an additional 0.10 ha bringing the total acreage of Syrah to 0.30 ha in the organically farmed Estate Vineyard. At Arkenstone the red varietals are planted predominantly in iron-rich red Aiken loam which is speckled with large volcanic rocks. The soil itself is nutrient deficient and the presence of volcanic rock provides optimal drainage. These factors result in vines that are constantly struggling to produce fruit. Having the fruit struggle naturally helps to produce a more concentrated, but balanced crop. The Syrah is hand-picked at night and hand/optical sorted first thing in the morning at the Estate. A small portion of the fruit will go into tank for fermentation full cluster and is fermented in stainless steel tanks followed by 22 months in French oak.

2018 Mauritson Wines, Loam Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 1x75cl

*Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon *Vintage production: 170 cases *Mauritson's vision for LOAM is simple: to produce exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons in Sonoma County by cultivating exemplary vineyards... defined by their soil. All wines in the LOAM series are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, 100% identical clone and rootstock - but embody the single variable of the soil in which they were grown. LOAM Cabernet Sauvignon is Mauritson's proprietary blend of grapes sourced from vineyards planted in Positas, Suther, and Clough soils. It is composed of the best vineyards, grown in the best soil, from the best appellations. Perfectly structured, LOAM balances the brightness and focused tannins of hillside fruit with the dense, rich characteristics of fruit grown in the ancient riverbed and valley floor soils. Four Corners Wine: "A real 'WOW' Cabernet! Rich and intense on the nose with bags of grilled herbs meat juices, an almost compote/red wine jus note, a touch of caramelised mushroom, and a core of pure blackcurrant. On the palate it's extremely refined, youthful, and pure, with a juicy core boasting great depth and texture. It's an intense Cabernet, hugely appealing and distinct in its character. Stunning now, easier 15+ years of cellaring potential too." (Dec. 2022)
