2021 Carter, Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon The O.G., Oakville 6x75cl

JD99WI99
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a With low yields and intense concentration, 2021 turns out to be very good year for the ‘O.G.’ block of Beckstoffer To Kalon. This is a... dense and ethereal Napa Cabernet Sauvignon revealing gorgeous notes of black and blue berry, complex floral and earth undertones matched with an inky deep purple color. Sweet firm tannins integrate with a plush, persistent and prodigious palate that has both weight and richness. As with prior tannic vintages of this wine, the structure and power of the clone 337 from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard lends itself well to an extended decant or several years of bottle age to really spread its wings. This wine should hit its prime in 5 to 10 years and continue to age and become more complex for decades.

2019 LEVY & McCLELLAN, AMPERSAND Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

Blend: c.80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc Production: c.225 cases Crafted by Bob with his wife Martha McClellan (winemaker at SLOAN ESTATE) at their family... Estate, LEVY & McCLELLAN is one of Napa's A-list 'closed-door' wineries, producing ultra-rare wines (just 375 cases annually) exclusively available and winery-direct from Four Corners Wine in the UK. The duo produces two stunning cuvées from their Estate vineyard located high above Calistoga, both based around a core of Cabernet Sauvignon. The AMPERSAND contains a splash more Merlot in the blend, and tends to be the more expressive early on. They have an almost almost obsessive focus in the vineyard and winery, with each small lot managed individually, ensuring gentle extraction and barrel fermentation for extremely high-quality, refined tannins. They are one of the only wineries to ferment solely in 225L French oak barrels, using a labour-intensive method of placing each one on rollers to rotate it and gently mix the grapes with the fermenting juice. This process is customised for each individual lot and means it takes 3 to 4 barrels during fermentation to fill just one barrel for the aging of the wine.

JD97
Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot Vintage production: c.350 cases Realm's Moonracer Estate sits on Wappo Hill near the town of Yountville. At 170 metres... above sea level, it's the highest elevation point on the valley floor. Wappo Hill was named after the Native American tribe that was prevalent in the area long before California was a state. The Wappos believed in Animism, a spiritual idea that all the elements of the natural environment have a soul. The Moonracer name and label are an oblique reference to the earliest inhabitants of the place Realm now calls home. The Cabernet Sauvignon-based Moonracer is composed of the finest lots from the Estate vineyard. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has much to choose from, as the site, with its multiple blocks, elevations, facings and diverse soils, has character in spades. Moonracer bears the unmistakable mark of this stimulating vineyard as well as the Stags Leap District. The wine is strong and powerful yet elegant, with refined tannins and plenty of depth. It beautifully combines characteristics typical of northern and southern Napa Valley. For the label, Barcelona-based artist Sergio Albiac inserts data taken from weather stations at the Moonracer vineyard, including temperature, wind, and solar radiation, into an algorithm that produces abstract images based on the data. Each vintage of Moonracer is represented by data from that particular year, and each label is unique.

While the individual cuvées focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, OV|SL is a leader in the modern ‘Napa Blend’ of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, placing it alongside huge names like Bevan Cellars EE Red Wine, and Dalla Valle Maya. It more than competes with these and its other peers, and 99 points from Suckling leaves it snapping at the heels of its stable mates… Four Corners Wine “Standing tall among Napa’s great Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc Blend, the OV|SL 2019 transcends instantly to best ever vintage of the remarkable wine. There’s so much concentration on the nose, with its core of black volcanic rock, charcoal smoke, a beautiful clarity of fruit, and a sense of total focus and harmony. On the palate, it is impeccable – a brilliant, brilliant wine with layers of crisp energy, minerality, lots of gorgeous fruit and so many layers. It’s rich and intense while be so light on its feet. With fantastic density and flecks of high-toned vibrancy throughout, there are few Cab-blends in the Valley to compete with this.” (Sept. 2023)

2021 Sine Qua Non, Distenta III Syrah, California 6x75cl

JD97-99RP98-100WI98-100
Blend: 81.7% Syrah, 11.3% Grenache, 3.3% Mourvedre, 2.1% Petite Sirah, 0.7% Gelber Muskatelle, 0.9% Petit Manseng Vintage production: n/a The brand-new Sine Qua Non Distenta III Syrah and Grenache... 2021s from winemaking legend Manfred Krankl have just been released to great fanfare. Last year's Distenta II 2020s were lauded by the critics - the Syrah scored 97-99 JD / 99 WA / 97-99 TWI, and the Grenache scored 97-100 JD / 97 WA / 98-100 TWI - and with the early impressions pointing to an amazing vintage in 2021 the numbers are going to be BIG when published later in the year. Do NOT miss the chance to secure an allocation now, as by the time the reviews are out it'll be too late! 2021 is a fantastic vintage for the Central Coast. Manfred has this to say: “My favorite growing conditions are mild weather, by California standards, with consistent sunshine, but not too much extreme heat. That is what we received in 2021. We have had only one single day where temperatures reached 100° and only at one of our four vineyard sites. As a result, we received fruit and wines that are reminiscent of 2019. Perhaps with slightly more richness, but there is a distinct resemblance. Lots of elegance, lots of character, lots of alertness and a good amount of playful spiciness with many layers and nuances. Nothing boring or predictable.” Sine Qua Non is famed for the unique names and artwork given to the wines in each vintage. However, in 2019 Manfred chose a new ongoing name for his Estate blends: Distenta, meaning 'unlabelled' in Latin. The 2019s were 'Distenta I', the 2020s were Distenta II, the new 2021s are 'Distenta III', and so on for future releases. He couldn't resist making a new artwork for each label though! Manfred Krankl: "Great, great color. Quite dark – no surprise I guess, but still a warm feeling to stare at it. A lot of work…for a long time…to get to appreciate it in a glass. Color is clearly not the most important aspect to the wine – to ANY wine – but it is some indicator of something good. In the nose there are tones of coffee grounds, rhubarb, red plums, toffee, boysenberry, mashed up strawberry skins (a little over the top…I know), cigar-box and even some chalk and dusty cookie crumbs. The mouth, the palate, is super soft, but not flabby, but rather still structured and very fanned out. Sort of like 2019 (if memory serves correctly), but with a touch more sexy flesh. There are plenty of tannins, but they are broad and satiny!!! We also got some mild Asian spices. The wine gets more and more lush the longer it sits in the glass. More palate enveloping too. Yahoo!!!"

Manfred Krankl: "Truly gorgeous dark burgundy color. A very pretty tone, one that is brilliant and shining. The nose is rich and super vibrant with notes of fresh currants, cranberries, pomegranate juice, freshly picked blackberries, cherries and rose. Also, some dried herbs and light black pepper kernels. The mouth is extremely smooth, yet there is a playful tension, but with a giving and enveloping palate. It is dense, but simultaneously tender on its feet. The tannins are silky and the wine finishes long, long, long and seemingly sweet (not literally) with a pie crust characteristic. The more air the wine gets, the more it opens up with more layers and a very pretty saline ocean air quality and some restrained citrus blossom too. It goes to the edge and then past it. An absolutely gorgeous wine. Just beautiful."

2016 Realm Cellars, Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 1x75cl

JD100
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a There are few names as evocative as Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. It is considered by many as the ultimate expression of Napa Valley, and... one of the very best vineyards in the world. This site has produced some of the most revered wines in Napa’s history at the hands of the few elite winemakers granted access to these most precious of vines. The secret to the Beckstoffer To Kalon magic lies in its location in western Oakville on an ancient alluvial fan. It was described by Robert Parker as “A true Napa Valley first growth”, yet with 33 hectares under vine it’s significantly smaller than any of the five illustrious First Growths (Château Haut-Brion is the smallest with 55ha under vine). It has more in common with the regal Grand Crus of Burgundy, with less than 20 winemakers granted access. This allows for a beautiful spectrum of vineyard expression – each encapsulating the soul of the terroir while exuding the signature style of each winery. The site's history can be traced back to 1868, when Hamilton Crabb planted the first vines. Legendary grower Andy Beckstoffer purchased his 89 acres in 1993, beginning an intensive period of renovation, modernisation and replanting. In 2007 the property was placed under a land conservation easement that forever prohibits non-agricultural development. The thin topsoil of clay loam sits on riverbed gravels and volcanic rocks – a combination that results in classic minerality and a graphite streak found in the best Cabernets. The vineyard is at the perfect sweet-spot around halfway up the Valley, where it receives the ideal sunshine for ripening the fruit, giving the wines an unmistakable depth and density of dark fruit aromatics and flavours. It is also tempered by the cooling winds from the San Pablo Bay and a natural circulation from cool air cascading down the Mayacamas Mountains. This is key to the wine’s unmistakable energy and elegance.
