2017 Haliotide, Stolo Vineyard Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged, San Luis Obispo Coast 1x75cl

RP94
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 40 cases Disgorged: February 2024 When we heard about a Sparkling Wine producer from the very edges of the San Luis Obispo coastline, we just had to find... out. We met owners Nicole and Lucas at their boutique winery in the gorgeous hills just south of Paso. Nicole's winemaking experience of working at cooler-climate coastal sites, and Lucas's knowledge as one of Paso's most in-demand vineyard managers, makes them the dream team. Inspired by the great cuvées of Champagne, they adopted more of a 'Grower Champagne' approach by focusing on two exceptional vineyards (Stolo and Topotero) just a couple of miles from the ocean. This bracing environment produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of tension and acidity, but it's the California sunshine that gives them an extra dimension. Nicole and Lucas make three cuvées: the Extra-Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from Topotero and given 30 months tirage; a razor-sharp Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay from Stolo) that sees 4 years on its lees; and a beautifully-textured BdB Late-Disgorgement that sees around 6.5 years tirage. All wines are barrel-fermented, and the results are pure class. For us, they would sit admirably alongside some of the world's top Fizz, but it's more telling that every winemaker we spoke with was on Haliotide's allocation list (waiting list, for a few!), and ranked the wines as the best Sparkling Wines of North America. With just a couple of hundred cases made, there's only one course-of action: reserve some bottles now and find out for yourself why the hype is more than justified!

2019 O’Shaughnessy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain 1x75cl

JD98+
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5 % St. Macaire, 1% Carménère, 1% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 4,385 cases If ever a wine evoked the true spirit of... its surroundings, it would be the majestic O'Shaughnessy Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. As you ascend the scenic Deer Park Road from the Valley floor the air becomes crisp and clear, filling with notions of wild herbs, pine trees, and sequoia. The soil becomes darker and rockier as the ancient volcanic terrain takes over, and there's an overriding feeling of serenity and calmness. These feelings are mirrored in the O'Shaughnessy 2019's gorgeous fruit and aromatics, distinctive minerality, gorgeous purity, and underlying elegance. Jeb Dunnuck awarded O'Shaughnessy Estate's highest score to date, an impressive 98+ points, suggesting more to come from what he calls "An incredible wine, and it flirts with perfection." Famed for it's longevity, a future triple-point score isn't out of the question... O'Shaughnessy's Howell Mountain Estate surrounds the winery, flowing through three distinct sites: The Amphitheatre Vineyard derives its name from the way it caresses the dramatic hillside, and the Rancho Del Oso Vineyard take its name from a resident black bear! The latest addition is the Osprey's Nest Vineyard, just upslope from the winery, which is shared with a young family of Ospreys. At the hands in winemaker Sean Capiaux, these three parcels exemplify the unique diversity of Howell Mountain.

2021 Realm Cellars, The Tempest, Napa Valley 6x75cl

DE98JD98JS97WI97
Blend: 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec Vintage production: 830 cases The Tempest was one of the first wines, and the first Proprietary Blend, produced by Realm Cellars. At the time, it... seemed almost uncanny that they were able to access three grape varietals at the same time from the same vineyard; it was blind luck or perhaps the proverbial “perfect storm.” The resulting wine reflected a fierce determination to brave the storm as well as a new desire to realise the possibilities of Merlot. Fruit for The Tempest is sourced from the cooler-climate Oak Knoll and Coombsville AVAs in the south of Napa. By building The Tempest 2021 around a core of fruit from Realm's world class Farella Vineyard, Coombsville's greatest site, their decision has paid off big time with the most elegant, pure and structured vintage we've tried to date. Having worked with this historic site (formerly a component of Opus One) since 2003, and farming it themselves for many years, the Realm Cellars team knows it better than anyone. With the switch from 'tenants' to owners, it's now a certainly that this stunning new iteration of The Tempest is the blueprint for the Napa Merlot by which all others will be measured. To signify this change in direct from The Tempest, and new label was commissioned to U.K. artist Richard Twose. Twose works in the tradition of non-finito, where the artwork is carried only to a point, leaving observers to fill in the rest for themselves. This technique resonates with Realm, where the feeling is that wine is an art form that invites participation, allowing wine lovers to attach their own memories to each bottle.

2021 Aperture, Oliver Ranch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 12x75cl

JD97RP97+
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 440 cases Coming from the custom vineyard that the legendary viticulture specialist Phil Freese planted in 1989 to showcase one of the best sites... in California, this Cabernet always demonstrates a remarkable sense of site. These vines grow on a gravelly plateau that creates well concentrated fruit that holds remarkable acidity and vibrant freshness. The grapes are hand-harvested and delivered to the winery within hours of being picked. Every cluster is methodically and obsessively sorted through 3 sets of sorting tables before being optically sorted to specific preferences. The berries then cold soak for 4-7 days with minimal air incorporation, allowing for complex colour and tannin extraction. Native yeast carry out cooler fermentations to preserve the unique aromas of the terroir. Air and temperature are controlled throughout the 14-24 day fermentation, and extended maceration is determined lot by lot to maintain the fine line between full extraction and keeping an elegant, silky texture. Wines go through malolactic fermentation naturally in barrel and are aged (sur-lie) for 22 months.
