2021 Carter Cellars, Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl
JD97+
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage production: n/a
From a great valley floor site in Oakville that lies just south of Beckstoffer To Kalon, this wine shows a deep and profound purple colour.... Notes of lively blue fruits, allspice, graphite and toasty oak all leap from the glass. An opulent and full-bodied wine, it shows ideal balance on the palate - a mixture of great fruit, rounded tannins and natural acidity that results in a lengthy finish with a savoury quality.

Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is the even rockier neighbour of Dr. Crane, nestled at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. Large rocks and... pebbles sit on the surface and continue below to create a tough environment for the vines, encouraging them to produce exceptional fruit. We’ve heard many a winemaker cite this as their favourite vineyard, and it’s not hard to see why with the big scores quickly racking up.
Four Corners Wine
“What – a – nose! Brilliant, just gorgeous, with lots of hot gravel, a lovely hint of reduction, a really intense fruit core dominated by pure blackcurrant. The palate is gorgeous, sublime, a brilliant Las Piedras. Bags of minerality and energy surround the most amazing dark fruit, with oh-so juicy tannins. It’s a big Cabernet, and an absolutely phenomenal one.” (Sep. 2023)

Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard may be the most famous and revered of Napa's great sites. Sitting on the alluvial fan washed down from the... Mayacamas Mountains centuries before, it’s produced a plethora of iconic wines at the hands of the exclusive group of winemakers granted access.
Four Corners Wine
“Dense, so rich and seriously dense with a big core and bags of concentration, frames by some sweet spices and a peppery/savoury edge. That palate is fantastic, so rich and an ultra-classic To Kalon that’s all about the tannins and epic structure. An utterly brilliant Cabernet with a very long life ahead of it.” (Sep. 2023)

The Amoenus Vineyard is one of Napa's most treasured sites among the top winemakers, and has been one of Maybach's stemmed single-vineyard... since 2009. This remarkable site is far off the beaten track, in the far north of Calistoga. It is tempered by cooling breezes funnelled through the Chalk Hill Gap to the north, helping the fruit retain acidity and freshness to balance with the gorgeously intense fruit.

Vintage production: 605 cases
Blankiet Estate is nestled above Yountville on the western foothills of the Mayacamas... Mountains. ?The Paradise Hills Vineyard is carved on steep hillsides just above the famed Dominus Estate Napanook parcel that was originally planted in 1838 by Yountville’s founder, George C. Yount.
With an ideal eastern exposure, the land is bathed with morning sun and benefits from natural shade in the hot afternoons, and cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay flow constantly across the land. It's located on three volcanic knolls where soil profiles vary from deeply fractured rocks and volcanic ash, to thick clay deposits, meaning each parcel is distinguished by a unique subsoil and microclimate.
At just 6.5 hectares in size it's a remarkably small site, yet the incredible complexity of the terroir allows for three distinct wines, each of a singular style. This is an Estate at the top of its game. Combined with the very talented winemaker Graeme MacDonald and owner Claude Blankiet's attention to detail, is truly worthy of an exploration.

Founded in 2016, Downstream Wines is the collective brainchild of Saxum Vineyards owner and... winemaker Justin Smith, the late-great oenologist Philippe Cambie, and their mutual friend, the visionary Sasha Verhage. Together, they crafted a wine that will be remembered forever as watershed moment in Paso Robles, and California as a whole.
When it comes to pushing the boundaries of greatness, their jaw-dropping Downstream is a magical wine. In the running as the greatest expression of Zinfandel ever produced, it's a peerless example of Cambie's unrivalled blending skills and Smith's rockstar winemaking. It also carries a real poignance as to honour the legacy of Cambie, following his passing in 2021, production was ended.
Cambie's work in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is legendary, none more so than his multiple 100-point scores at Clos St. Jean. He had long desired to work with Justin in Paso Robles, focusing on 'heritage' Zinfandel. They chose the old vines of the Dusi Vineyard, planted in 1945, complimenting them with a carefully selected blend of varietals from sites including Saxum's own James Berry Vineyard.
The result is a taste and style that can only come from California: rich, intense, hedonistic, with an underlying elegance and energy. It's indicative of the forward thinking and ground breaking approach that's at its strongest in Paso Robles.
Downstream is already a highly desirable and ultra-rare gem, and will be a treasured prize among collectors of California's finest wines who are lucky enough to find some.

Cliff Lede's Poetry Vineyard sits in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains in Napa's Stags... Leap District AVA, and this iconic cuvée has been described by Robert Parker as "The quintessential Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon that is Napa Valley’s version of Château Margaux." Having averaged a breath-taking 99 points with Dunnuck and The Wine Advocate since head winemaker Christopher Tynan joined in 2012, it more than deserves this comparison.
Poetry draws its uniqueness from shallow, volcanic soils atop fractured shale. Due to the stressful nature of the site, planted with high vine density and farmed to very low yields, the vines develop slowly and produce small flavourful berries. The vineyard is planted to legendary, proprietary heritage selections of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2019 stands as one of the finest vintages to date with a perfect 100 points from Lisa Perrotti-Brown (TWA) who describes it as "Finishing epically long and staggeringly gorgeous. WOW!"

The name Deux Grenouilles is French for 'Two Frogs'. The photo on the front label includes a Citroën 2CV. 2CV stood for 'deux chevaux' or 'deux chevaux-vapeur', which translates from French to English as two steam horses or two tax horsepower, a reference to the low cost of registering the car, and more generally the low cost of buying and maintaining the car. It has many parallels to the Volkswagen Beetle. This was the car Manfred wanted when he turned 18 years old.
