2020 Haliotide, Topotero Vineyard Extra Brut Rosé, San Luis Obispo Coast 1x75cl

RP94
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 120 cases Disgorged: October 2023 When we heard about a Sparkling Wine producer from the very edges of the San Luis Obispo coastline, we just had to find... out. We met owners Nicole and Lucas at their boutique winery in the gorgeous hills just south of Paso. Nicole's winemaking experience of working at cooler-climate coastal sites, and Lucas's knowledge as one of Paso's most in-demand vineyard managers, makes them the dream team. Inspired by the great cuvées of Champagne, they adopted more of a 'Grower Champagne' approach by focusing on two exceptional vineyards (Stolo and Topotero) just a couple of miles from the ocean. This bracing environment produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of tension and acidity, but it's the California sunshine that gives them an extra dimension. Nicole and Lucas make three cuvées: the Extra-Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from Topotero and given 30 months tirage; a razor-sharp Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay from Stolo) that sees 4 years on its lees; and a beautifully-textured BdB Late-Disgorgement that sees around 6.5 years tirage. All wines are barrel-fermented, and the results are pure class. For us, they would sit admirably alongside some of the world's top Fizz, but it's more telling that every winemaker we spoke with was on Haliotide's allocation list (waiting list, for a few!), and ranked the wines as the best Sparkling Wines of North America. With just a couple of hundred cases made, there's only one course-of action: reserve some bottles now and find out for yourself why the hype is more than justified!

2018 Spottswoode, Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Helena 6x75cl

JD100VM99WI100
Blend: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot Vintage production: 4,278 cases Established in 1882, Spottswoode Estate is distinguished by the pre-Prohibition Victorian home... depicted on our wine label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts in 1910 and later acquired by Mary and Jack Novak in 1972. Mary released Spottswoode’s first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Situated on the western edge of St. Helena in Napa Valley, the Spottswoode Estate terroir is ideal for winegrowing. The alluvial clay loam from the Sulphur Creek fan provides superb drainage while cool maritime breezes passing between Spring Mountain and the Mayacamas range allow the fruit to ripen evenly. At Spottswoode, grape growing and winemaking are intimately linked. In addition to the health and resilience that organics and biodynamics have brought to the vineyard, the individual attention given to each block contributes to the consistent quality and unique characteristics of the wines.

2019 O’Shaughnessy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain 1x75cl

JD98+
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5 % St. Macaire, 1% Carménère, 1% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 4,385 cases If ever a wine evoked the true spirit of... its surroundings, it would be the majestic O'Shaughnessy Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. As you ascend the scenic Deer Park Road from the Valley floor the air becomes crisp and clear, filling with notions of wild herbs, pine trees, and sequoia. The soil becomes darker and rockier as the ancient volcanic terrain takes over, and there's an overriding feeling of serenity and calmness. These feelings are mirrored in the O'Shaughnessy 2019's gorgeous fruit and aromatics, distinctive minerality, gorgeous purity, and underlying elegance. Jeb Dunnuck awarded O'Shaughnessy Estate's highest score to date, an impressive 98+ points, suggesting more to come from what he calls "An incredible wine, and it flirts with perfection." Famed for it's longevity, a future triple-point score isn't out of the question... O'Shaughnessy's Howell Mountain Estate surrounds the winery, flowing through three distinct sites: The Amphitheatre Vineyard derives its name from the way it caresses the dramatic hillside, and the Rancho Del Oso Vineyard take its name from a resident black bear! The latest addition is the Osprey's Nest Vineyard, just upslope from the winery, which is shared with a young family of Ospreys. At the hands in winemaker Sean Capiaux, these three parcels exemplify the unique diversity of Howell Mountain.

2021 Arista, UV El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

JD96JS97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 389 cases Arista's most distinctive wine is the El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay. Arista's vines are composed of Old Wente and Montrachet clones, on the vital Goldridge soils - a recipe that produces the most classical of wines: rich, intense, earthy, and loaded with fruit and spice, all balanced by a minerality and energy that showcases winemaker Matt Courtney's contemporary approach.

2019 Argot, Babel Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 3x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 50 cases The three single-vineyard Cabs (Bonny's Vineyard, Cuvée Leo, and Sage Ridge Vineyard) are sublime and unique in their styles, but what... could be more exciting that to cherry pick the best barrels for an uber-blend showcasing the very best of the best… In 2019, Justin knew he’d found his three ‘homes’ and was ready to make the selection, making the first vintage of ‘Babel’ Cabernet Sauvignon. Argot's grandest Cabernet Sauvignon is a cellar selection of the most complex and significantly fruited barrels, complemented by a profound tannin profile allowing for the benefits of a nearly 3-year elevage. Built from the ground up Babel is a towering proposition of a wine—provocative, pure and immediate. We could wax lyrical about the ‘Babel’ all day, but the responses of everyone we’d tried it with so far (including ourselves!) has spoken volumes: jaws to the floor, followed by minutes of silence and contemplation, routinely followed by expletive-laden praise! Justin very kindly reserve 60 bottles (in 3x75cl OWC) for us in the UK, making them the only cases available outside of his mailing list!
