When matched with sweet firm tannins from the best French barrels, this wine ends with a velvety finish that only gets better with age.

2021 Carter, Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon The O.G., Oakville 6x75cl

JD99
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a With low yields and intense concentration, 2021 turns out to be very good year for the ‘O.G.’ block of Beckstoffer To Kalon. This is a... dense and ethereal Napa Cabernet Sauvignon revealing gorgeous notes of black and blue berry, complex floral and earth undertones matched with an inky deep purple color. Sweet firm tannins integrate with a plush, persistent and prodigious palate that has both weight and richness. As with prior tannic vintages of this wine, the structure and power of the clone 337 from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard lends itself well to an extended decant or several years of bottle age to really spread its wings. This wine should hit its prime in 5 to 10 years and continue to age and become more complex for decades.

We’ve heard many a winemaker cite this as their favourite vineyard, and it’s not hard to see why with the big scores quickly racking up. Four Corners Wine “What – a – nose! Brilliant, just gorgeous, with lots of hot gravel, a lovely hint of reduction, a really intense fruit core dominated by pure blackcurrant. The palate is gorgeous, sublime, a brilliant Las Piedras. Bags of minerality and energy surround the most amazing dark fruit, with oh-so juicy tannins. It’s a big Cabernet, and an absolutely phenomenal one.” (Sep. 2023)

JD97
Blend: 76% Zinfandel, 8% Syrah, 6% Mataró, 6% Petite Sirah, 4% Tempranillo Production: 230 cases Founded in 2016, Downstream Wines is the collective brainchild of Saxum Vineyards owner and... winemaker Justin Smith, the late-great oenologist Philippe Cambie, and their mutual friend, the visionary Sasha Verhage. Together, they crafted a wine that will be remembered forever as watershed moment in Paso Robles, and California as a whole. When it comes to pushing the boundaries of greatness, their jaw-dropping Downstream is a magical wine. In the running as the greatest expression of Zinfandel ever produced, it's a peerless example of Cambie's unrivalled blending skills and Smith's rockstar winemaking. It also carries a real poignance as to honour the legacy of Cambie, following his passing in 2021, production was ended. Cambie's work in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is legendary, none more so than his multiple 100-point scores at Clos St. Jean. He had long desired to work with Justin in Paso Robles, focusing on 'heritage' Zinfandel. They chose the old vines of the Dusi Vineyard, planted in 1945, complimenting them with a carefully selected blend of varietals from sites including Saxum's own James Berry Vineyard.  The result is a taste and style that can only come from California: rich, intense, hedonistic, with an underlying elegance and energy. It's indicative of the forward thinking and ground breaking approach that's at its strongest in Paso Robles. Downstream is already a highly desirable and ultra-rare gem, and will be a treasured prize among collectors of California's finest wines who are lucky enough to find some.

2020 Dragonette, Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 1x75cl

JS96RP97VM96
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage Production: 320 cases One of the producers at the forefront of Sta. Rita's Hills' success is Dragonette Cellars. Winemaker Brandon Sparks-Gills, and brothers Steve and... John Dragonette, select the region's elite vineyards to make Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of utter refinement and distinction. The Fiddlestix Vineyard sits on the sloped banks of the Santa Ynez River, where it's cooled from the persistent Pacific breezes. The resulting Pinot Noir is full of depth and intensity, while carrying bags of elegance and finesse. With 97 points (WA) the 2020 is the highest-ever scoring wine from this amazing site, and it's one of the best buys of the vintage.

2019 Dragonette, Duvarita Vineyard Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County 1x75cl

RP95+VM95
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage Production: 200 cases The Duvarita Vineyard is in the far west of the region, sitting literally metres outside of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA boundary, and it is one of... the most sought after vineyards. The steep slopes sit on a combination of ancient sand dunes and sandstone, producing wines of characteristic depth and intensity. Dragonette's Chardonnay comes from the highest blocks, more influenced by the cooling Pacific fog and full of stone fruit and a crisp minerality, and we love the extra dimension on the palate that comes from lees contact. For some summer-dining inspiration, the regional seafood specialties are the famous local halibut and sea bass, either (or both!) of which are perfect with a glass of Duvarita Chardonnay.

2015 Soliste, L’Age D’Or Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 12x75cl

Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 417 cases L’Age D’Or comes from a vineyard just north of Sebastopol adjacent to the Laguna de Santa Rosa, the largest tributary of the Russian River.... Originally planted in 1971, these are among the oldest Chardonnay vines in the Russian River Valley. The vineyard is immaculately and sustainably managed. Having white Burgundies as benchmarks, especially the wines of Raveneau, Jobard and Coche-Dury, Don and Claude were never to anxious to even attempt to craft Chardonnay in the new world as they had always felt that the wines were sometimes over the top with buttery pop corn mouth feel, way too much oak, high alcohol and clunky. Their success with Sauvignon Blanc, and especially with St. Andelain, convinced them to begin a three year commitment with a fabulous, well-established vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Their willingness to experiment with different vinification as well as aging for 16 months in 600L thick stave barrels (44% new) results in a Chardonnay of great elegance, length and verve; very Meursault-like.

2018 Soliste, Forêt Pinot Noir, Sonoma County 12x75cl

Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage Production: 117 cases Forêt comes from a magnificent secluded vineyard near Occidental. The hillside vineyard has a northeastern exposure, a very steep slope, and is... in the middle of a spectacular redwood forest. Just 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean on the western coastal range, is perhaps the most visually stunning vineyard which Soliste uses – the depth of aromatics and spice in Forêt are a pure reflection of this truly unique vineyard’s site, slope, climate, and clone. Don Plumley & Claude Koeberle: "Deep hues of dark plums, cassis, boysenberries with brilliant amethyst gemstone, showing specs of skin pulp and minerals, which denotes whole cluster press extraction. Forêt’s alluring nose is a complex bouquet of blackcurrants, graphite mineral, black pepper, plums, Bing cherries, interlaced redwood pine needles. As the wines open up, profound aromas of dark fruit compote, licorice, spiked with Alpine forest smells, burnt orange peel, elevate the wine to an Amaro like infusion. Decanting is a must for this wine to appreciate all of its subtilities. The front palate is exceptionally voluptuous and textural, with pure concentration of blackberries, dark cherries, boysenberries, and candied violets, all lifted by dried herbal and evergreen forest. The mid-palate possesses an immensely concentrated core of dark fruit compote, framed by the rich structuring tannins created by our commitment to the whole cluster press. As the wine opens up, the luscious, exotic dark fruit elixir is layered with pulpy tannins adding earthy tones, gaminess, exotic spices, mint, and black pepper, all in perfect harmony. The finish is impressive in its length, focus and complexity. The whole clusters are definitely present, chewy, grippy, pulling the richness of the fruit into an aristocratic elegance. Bright acidity of red tart cherries, cranberry, and violet, infused with wet stone minerals lift the mid-palate fruit density, elongating the wine into a perpetual finish."

From this vineyard you can see the Pacific Ocean, which puts the vineyard near the fringe of where it is possible for nature to allow the cultivation of wine grapes. 2019 Vérité, Assortment Case, Sonoma County 3x75cl

RP100/99/99WI100/100/98
Case contains 1x75cl each: Le Désir 2019, La Joie 2019, and La Muse 2019 With scores of 100/99/99 points from The Wine Advocate, and 100/100/98+ from The Wine Independent, the 2019s are three... sensational wines that offer a remarkable vinous journey through Sonoma's greatest terroir. Founded and developed by pioneer vintner Jess Jackson, the goal of Vérité was to focus on exploring the identity of eastern-Sonoma's hillside vineyards through combining expectational sites across to showcase terroir and vintage characteristics to the highest standard. Jackson's first-choice to head the project renowned St. Emilion winemaker Pierre Seillan, who arrived for the first vintage in 1998. They both took inspiration from the most famous Châteaux of Pomerol to craft a distinctly 'Sonoma' Merlot that could stand proudly aside it's French cousins - La Muse. It was such a resounding success and led them to explore more micro 'Grand Crus' along the mountainous eastern portion of Sonoma. They soon developed a Cabaret Sauvignon based cuvée that was a dead ringer for the greats of Pauillac - La Joie - and a Cabernet Franc led blend inspired by the modern classics of St. Emilion - Le Désir. Now, with significant input from Pierre's daughter, the uber-talented Hélène Seillan, the 2019s have transcended any comparison to Bordeaux to stand among the most exceptional and striking examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot in Northern California.

2021 Aperture, Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County 12x75cl

RP96
Blend: 97% Sauvignon Blanc, 3% Semillon Production: 1,808 cases Aperture's Sauvignon Blanc was originally inspired by winemaker Jesse Katz’s experience working at Bordeaux First-Growth, Château... Haut-Brion in Bordeaux. His unique barrel program provides the wine with a distinct complexity and a subtle weight on the palate. The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc is the first vintage to include Estate-grown Sémillion and Sauvignon Musqué, planted on the Aperture property in 2019. These two estate blocks were hand-harvested in early September while fruit from Dry Stack Vineyard in the Bennett Valley AVA was brought in in early October, consistent with this vineyard’s unique late-ripening characteristics. 1/3 New French oak, 1/3 once used French Oak, and the remaining neutral French oak was selected for this vintage’s barrel program. Once transferred to barrel, the wine was placed in a cold barrel room to keep fermentation cool and slow to intentionally preserve the bright aromatics and fresh quality. As the wine slowly fermented for an additional 3 weeks in barrel, it was topped and stirred weekly. The wine stayed in those same barrels for 6 months. At that point, Jesse stopped the fermentation in order to maintain the wine’s natural bright acidity.

#Newsflash | “Postcard from California: ‘Visitors are toasting their new found freedoms’

There’s a festive atmosphere in Napa and Sonoma, where tourists are back and Covid rules are set to be dropped.” We were thrilled to read Matt Villano’s article in @thetimes over the weekend, and the news that tourism officials say visitor numbers to #Napa and #Sonoma are at their highest since the pandemic started, up by as much as 230 per cent in some parts of the region. If tickets to the three-day music festival “BottleRock”, which will include headliners from Stevie Nicks and the Foo Fighters, selling out in an hour is anything to go by, all signs are pointing to a super summer ahead.
