2020 Haliotide, Topotero Vineyard Extra Brut Rosé, San Luis Obispo Coast 1x75cl

RP94
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 120 cases Disgorged: October 2023 When we heard about a Sparkling Wine producer from the very edges of the San Luis Obispo coastline, we just had to find... out. We met owners Nicole and Lucas at their boutique winery in the gorgeous hills just south of Paso. Nicole's winemaking experience of working at cooler-climate coastal sites, and Lucas's knowledge as one of Paso's most in-demand vineyard managers, makes them the dream team. Inspired by the great cuvées of Champagne, they adopted more of a 'Grower Champagne' approach by focusing on two exceptional vineyards (Stolo and Topotero) just a couple of miles from the ocean. This bracing environment produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of tension and acidity, but it's the California sunshine that gives them an extra dimension. Nicole and Lucas make three cuvées: the Extra-Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from Topotero and given 30 months tirage; a razor-sharp Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay from Stolo) that sees 4 years on its lees; and a beautifully-textured BdB Late-Disgorgement that sees around 6.5 years tirage. All wines are barrel-fermented, and the results are pure class. For us, they would sit admirably alongside some of the world's top Fizz, but it's more telling that every winemaker we spoke with was on Haliotide's allocation list (waiting list, for a few!), and ranked the wines as the best Sparkling Wines of North America. With just a couple of hundred cases made, there's only one course-of action: reserve some bottles now and find out for yourself why the hype is more than justified!

2021 Argot, Bonny’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 1x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 150 cases Located at the northern border of the Oakville AVA, Bonny's Vineyard has been revered as a National Treasure since the 1970s. It's owned... by the Meyers Family and named after matriarch Bonny Myers, who was one of the founders of Silver Oak in 1972. The family grant access to a tiny handful of artisan winemakers with the caveat they can't name the vineyard of the bottle. Justin's growing reputation saw him offered a parcel of fruit in 2019, and upon tasting this first vintage Bonny declared it so good all future vintages should proudly declare the vineyard designation. Argot's 2021 is the first to do so, and represents not just an important moment in time, but a gorgeous expression of the gravelly, alluvial soils in this part of Oakville.

2021 Argot, Sage Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 1x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 75 cases The Sage Ridge Vineyard is in the glitzy 'Pritchard Hill' area, facing Chappellet and Colgin Cellars across the edges of Lake Hennessey in... the Vaca Mountains. The soil's story endures with the uplifting of ancient shallow seabeds, plate tectonics, and glaciation that continues over millennia with the erosion and transportation of old metamorphic rock created under intense heat and pressure. The signature characteristics of the Cabernets produced here are a delectably pure fruit character delivered with finesse, and aromatically lifted by an unmistakable mix of wildflowers and savoury herbs.

2022 Nid Tisse, Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 59 cases Nid-Tissé is already well on the way to being one of California’s most sought-after labels, and the naturally low production levels means... getting an allocation at release is essential. Owner and winemaker Marie-Laure Ammons studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy before moving to California where she was hand-picked by Philippe Melka to join his team. Following 18 years at Atelier Melka, gaining hands-on experience at California’s top vineyards, she took the next step in her career to start Nid-Tissé. With her inaugural 2019 vintage releases, Marie-Laure rocketed to the top with her mailing list becoming a waiting list in the blink of an eye. Sommeliers and buyers at the top Michelin-starred restaurants scrambled for an allocation, and the subsequent amazing scores fanned the flames! For her Chardonnays, Marie-Laure made no compromise in selecting two of the most famous names of all: from Hyde Vineyard in Napa’s Los Carneros (hence the connection with Chris Hyde!), she uses a rare selection of 32 and 29 year old vines, with the Nid-Tissé Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 spending 12 months in a combination of 67% new Burgundian French oak, and 33% custom made Italian clay amphora. Rich and intense with extraordinary complexity, coupled with superb energy and acidity, this is a modern-day Hyde classic. Further northwest, towards the coast, the historic Bacigalupi Vineyard lies in the heart of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Since the early 1970s, this site has been heralded as one of the most important in California, playing a winning role in a certain ‘Judgement of Paris’. While that was a significant moment in time, the wines produced there now are better than ever. Marie-Laure has access to the best block of Wente Clone vines, with the Nid-Tissé Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 seeing 16 months in a mixture of 80% old Burgundian French oak and 20% clay egg. The result is a gorgeous wine driven by texture and elegance.

Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 485 cases The Oakville Estate Vineyard lies in western Oakville, overlooked on three sides by Harlan Estate, BOND Winery, and Promontory Winery.... The 2019 is unique as the first vintage to be 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and, in out opinion, would outperform its neighbours and peers to the east including Screaming Eagle. Pure Cabernet cannot be any better than this, reaffirmed by James Suckling who scored it 100pts.

2009 Scarecrow, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford 1x75cl

RP92VM92
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Production: 1,000 cases Of Napa's great Estates, Scarecrow has perhaps the most interesting story of all. The vineyard in Rutherford was planted in 1945 by... J.J. Cohn, who had moved to California from New York in the 1920s to work in Los Angeles. He quickly rose to become one of Hollywood’s most important figures and became Chief of Production at the illustrious MGM Studios. During the Golden Age of Hollywood he was behind some of the greatest films of all time, including Ben Hur, Gigi and, most famously, The Wizard of Oz! Cohn's vineyard quickly became a revered source of fruit for some of the most celebrated Napa wines, including Opus One, Phelps Insignia and Inglenook (Niebaum-Coppola). Cohn’s grandson, Brett Lopez, founded his new winery on the property in 2003 and named it Scarecrow in honour of his grandfather. It has since scored a plethora of100 point scores among the major critics, placing forever among Napa’s ‘First Growth’ Estates.
