2021 Seven Apart, Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 1x75cl

WI98+
Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot Vintage production: 1,500 cases There is no doubt at all: Seven Apart is a name that will soon be spoken of alongside the Napa's... Elite wineries. The Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon is based around a core of fruit from the Estate's Base Camp Vineyard, sprinkled with hand-picked barrels from Estate's Stags Ridge Vineyard. The resulting wine in 2021 is a gorgeous expression that, for us, shows a new side to Napa that we can't wait to bring to the UK's most discerning cellars. Stags Ridge Vineyard sits above the fog line at an elevation of 450 metres on Atlas Peak's rocky, red volcanic soils. The small berries on these 25 year old vines produce wines rich in colour, tannin, and concentration. Base Camp Vineyard, planted between 1994 and 1998, surrounds the winery at the base of Atlas Peak in Soda Canyon, nestled alongside the famous Silverado Trail. The soils here consists of sand, clay, and gravel, giving the wines a rich structure and opulence. Such great fruit demands a great winemaker, and that person is Morgan Maureze. Having spend his formative years working at Dominus Estate, where his father was appointed general manager in 1985, Morgan graduated from UC Davis and the University of Bordeaux. He spent time working at Châteaux Haut-Brion and Petrus, before completing his Thesis at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti! He was inexorably drawn back to California, where he was hand-picked by legendary winemaker Andy Erickson, becoming his right-hand man at Estates including Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle Vineyards. Andy was Seven Apart's inaugural winemaker in 2018, before championing Morgan as his successor in 2023 - most importantly, they had already worked together on the 2021s, so Morgan was the perfect choice.

2021 Arista, UV Lucky Well Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 6x75cl

JS98
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 653 cases The Lucky Well vineyard sits atop a knoll on the western edge of the Sebastopol hills outside of the towns of Graton and Sebastopol. The area is... home to some of the most highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in the Russian River Valley due in large part to the perfect confluence of soil, climate, and elevation. The vineyard is in an area often referred to as the “banana belt” of the Russian River Valley because, though on the very coolest, foggiest, and western edge of the appellation, it sits on a knoll that rises above the fog line. This feature exposes the fruit to more gentle sunlight, which allows very slow and even ripening across the entire growing season. Arista's 4-acre section was planted in 2008 to Pommard, Swan, and Calera clones of Pinot Noir.

2021 Arista, UV El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 6x75cl

JS97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 389 cases Arista's most distinctive wine is the El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay. The site rests on a ridgeline in the heart of the Russian River Valley AVA... that's cooled by the morning and evening coastal mists, yet bathed in glorious California sunshine for a few hours each day. Arista's vines are composed of Old Wente and Montrachet clones, on the vital Goldridge soils - a recipe that produces the most classical of wines: rich, intense, earthy, and loaded with fruit and spice, all balanced by a minerality and energy that showcases winemaker Matt Courtney's contemporary approach.

2021 Teeter-Totter, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 12x75cl

JD93
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 5% Charbano, 5% Zinfandel Vintage production: 6,000 cases Anyone who's drunk a Cabernet Sauvignon made by Benoit Touquette will know why he's... regarded as one of the greatest winemakers of his generation. With countless 100 point scores to his name, he's at the top of his game. So when he releases a Cab under his own label, it's a complete no-brainer! That makes his Teeter-Totter Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 one of the shrewdest buys from Napa, especially with Jeb Dunnuck saying "California needs more wines like this." With Teeter-Totter, Benoit gets to cherry pick fruit from his favourite vineyards throughout Napa. The result is a red that's both serious and complex, as well as delicious and moreish from the word go. In 2021, the final blend was 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the most famous and prestigious vineyards in Rutherford, with 5% each of Petite Sirah, Charbono and Zinfandel from Calistoga. It's in the classic Benoit-style with plenty of richness and opulence, with a great structure to carry it along.

2022 Nid Tisse, Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 59 cases Nid-Tissé is already well on the way to being one of California’s most sought-after labels, and the naturally low production levels means... getting an allocation at release is essential. Owner and winemaker Marie-Laure Ammons studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy before moving to California where she was hand-picked by Philippe Melka to join his team. Following 18 years at Atelier Melka, gaining hands-on experience at California’s top vineyards, she took the next step in her career to start Nid-Tissé. With her inaugural 2019 vintage releases, Marie-Laure rocketed to the top with her mailing list becoming a waiting list in the blink of an eye. Sommeliers and buyers at the top Michelin-starred restaurants scrambled for an allocation, and the subsequent amazing scores fanned the flames! For her Chardonnays, Marie-Laure made no compromise in selecting two of the most famous names of all: from Hyde Vineyard in Napa’s Los Carneros (hence the connection with Chris Hyde!), she uses a rare selection of 32 and 29 year old vines, with the Nid-Tissé Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 spending 12 months in a combination of 67% new Burgundian French oak, and 33% custom made Italian clay amphora. Rich and intense with extraordinary complexity, coupled with superb energy and acidity, this is a modern-day Hyde classic. Further northwest, towards the coast, the historic Bacigalupi Vineyard lies in the heart of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Since the early 1970s, this site has been heralded as one of the most important in California, playing a winning role in a certain ‘Judgement of Paris’. While that was a significant moment in time, the wines produced there now are better than ever. Marie-Laure has access to the best block of Wente Clone vines, with the Nid-Tissé Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 seeing 16 months in a mixture of 80% old Burgundian French oak and 20% clay egg. The result is a gorgeous wine driven by texture and elegance.

Vintage production: 1,720 Assortment cases 'Head Held High' Case contains: 2x75cl White 2020, 2x75cl Syrah 2020, 2x75cl Grenache 2020 Like father, like son: Nikolas Krankl has stepped firmly out of... the imperious shadow of his father, the legendary Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non fame, to quickly become “Unquestionably one of the up and coming superstars of California” (JD) with his Fingers Crossed wines.   They are world-class wines that stand alone for their elegance, complexity, and vitality, and the Assortment Cases have become one of the hottest tickets in California!   In 2020, Nik was able to take over his father’s blocks as the famed Bien Nacido Vineyard since Sine Qua Non recently became 100% Estate grown. This makes all three new releases the most exciting to date, especially the White. The Fingers Crossed Chardonnay comes from Block-W which was planted in 1973, making it the vineyard’s oldest. It was these very same vines that went into the legendary Sine Qua Non Pearl Clutcher 2012! Nik also uses fruit from one of California’s other great terroirs, the Sandford & Benedict Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, for all three cuvées.   Presented as two bottles of each wine in a stunning wooden box, the Fingers Crossed ‘Head Held High’ Assortment Case 2020 is a cellar essential and as collectible as it gets.
