2015 FUTO, OV|SL Estate Red Wine, Napa Valley 1x150cl

JD99+
*Blend: 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot *Vintage production: 674 cases *The FUTO OV | SL 2015 showcases the synergy of the two estate properties in Oakville... and Stags Leap District. At its core are co-fermentations of fruit from these hillsides that Jason believes are perfect foils for one another. Oakville is imposing and impressive with its broad-shouldered stature, while Stags Leap is a timeless beauty with classic proportions. This wine is proof that 1+1 can equal 3. The wine perfectly captures both, the vintage and the synergy between the two sites. Rose hip, black cherry, and sweet savoury aromas point to the natural richness of the year in its amped up expression. On the palate, chiselled cassis, raspberry and violet flavours pulse with energy, onto a layered graphitic infused bed of fine tannin. Even with all of its aromatic and flavour explosiveness, there is a level of translucence and energy that elevate the wine.

2016 Soliste, Terre Promise Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast 1x75cl

*Blend: 100% Pinot Noir *Vintage Production: 117 cases *The story behind Terre Promise is a fascinating one. Don and Claude produced their first MonoClone® Pinot Noir in 2006, crafted from the... Dijon 115 clone in the family’s Sonatera Vineyard. The 115 clone originated in Burgundy where is was saved in early 1950s by Raymond Bernard, who was allowed to graft in Domaine Ponsot’s vineyard in the Grand Cru of Clos de la Roche. It was then sent first to David Lett in Oregon and made its way down to Sonoma. Of the many clones Soliste have worked with, their favourite is Dijon 115.   In 2015, Don and Claude were introduced to Terra de Promissio Vineyard, just south of Petaluma, and fell in love with it straight away. They noted a parcel of Dijon 115 vines, and with their relentless dedication to produce the very best Pinot Noir, they applied their knowledge to create a Pinot worthy of their MonoClone® programme. Of all the wines produced by Soliste, this is Don's favourite - so far...

2023 Fait Main, Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

DE99JD100
*Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon *Vintage production: 350 cases *The Fait-Main Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a modern-day icon, and for our tastes is one of the best... Cabernets to date from this remarkable site in western St. Helena. Located at the foot of Spring Mountain in St. Helena, the Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard marks the first site ever produced by Fait-Main. The foreign outcrop of stony, tough soil in the middle of a typically soft and rich valley floor, presents more like Bordeaux than St. Helena. For French-born winemaker Benoit Touquette, it was this connection to home that inspired him to create his own label. “I never felt compelled to make my own wine until I visited Las Piedras Vineyard. It felt like coming home.” Tracing its roots back to the original Mexican land grants, Las Piedras vineyard is thought to be the first planted in what is now the St. Helena AVA. Farm workers aptly named the vineyard Las Piedras, which translates to the stones in Spanish. The richly layered palate that each vintage has expressed thus far, shows the site’s compelling interplay of fruit and structure, bound together with graceful minerality. It boasts the same rocky terroir as its famous neighbour, Dr. Crane, but is emerging to produce even more concentrated and mineral-driven Cabs. There are a small handful of winemakers who are granted access to this hallowed terroir and Benoit is right at the forefront. BENOIT ON THE NEW BOTTLES (from 2023): “Every bottle tells a story. In 2010, my friend Mario Sculatti gifted me an antique bottle recovered from a shipwreck — a very old glass bottle, weathered and pitted with time and the sea, told a silent story of heritage and craftsmanship. As soon as I picked it up, I realized this was a piece of history: an enduring memento from an ill-fated 19th century voyage, from Pauillac in Bordeaux. I was struck by its extraordinary elegance and charisma, and the artistry of its hand-blown mastery. I took the bottle home, and had it examined, using MRI technology, in a hospital, to map its graceful curves and contours, and discovering that it contained just 700mL, rather than our standard 750mL. In 2013, I decided to try to replicate its striking shape in a handblown bottle for Fait-Main, using the unique skills of a Bay Area glassblower—honoring the craftsmanship of the past with that of today—but I was unsuccessful due to variations in the bottle’s neck and body shape. That single moment sparked an obsession. In early 2021, I set out to create a bottle that honored both tradition and innovation—a vessel as distinctive as the wine it would hold. The process was anything but simple. Perfecting the weight, proportions, and structure demanded precision, patience, and countless revisions. But after years of refinement, I arrived at something truly extraordinary: a custom-molded bottle that embodies the essence of Fait-Main. This is more than just a container; it’s a tribute to craftsmanship, legacy, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. A story etched in glass, carrying forward the spirit of tradition—just like that shipwrecked relic that first sparked my imagination.” BENOIT ON THE NEW LABELS (from 2023): "With this exceptional vintage, we are thrilled to unveil our latest collaboration with the renowned painter, Hunt Slonem. His extraordinary artistry has inspired a series of beautiful bespoke labels for our newest Fait-Main releases. These captivating, specially commissioned designs will grace our single-vineyard wines this year, reflecting our deep commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity. My vision for custom-crafted Fait-Main wine bottles wouldn’t be complete without them, and we can not wait for you to experience our interpretation of handmade excellence. Slonem is an American artist renowned for his colorful depictions of butterflies, birds, and – most famously – bunnies. His work is featured in the permanent collections of museums around the world, from the Miró Museum in Barcelona to the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, to the Guggenheim, Whitney and Metropolitan Museums in New York. Slonem’s bunny paintings have captured my imagination since the moment I first discovered them. With vibrant colors and endearing expressions, they radiate joy and playfulness in a way I find irresistible. The rabbit’s symbolism as an image of creativity, fertility and abundance seems to me to be a perfect match for wine, itself a symbol of celebrations, togetherness, and the delicious pleasure of good living. Slonem’s signature repetition of shapes also reminds me of the diligence and discipline required in winemaking, where we engage our skill and craftsmanship year after year to achieve a transcendent result. I commissioned this bespoke Slonem label for Fait-Main’s new single-vineyard wines to reflect both the quality and craftsmanship of what’s in the bottle, and the sense of creative fun and festivity I want to share with my wines. I hope this special edition label brings you as much joy as it does to me."

2023 The Royal Nonesuch Farm, Red, York Mountain 12x75cl

JD96JS96TWP95VM95
*Blend: 67% Grenache, 19% Syrah, 12% Graciano, 2% Clairette Blanche *Vintage production: 440 cases *Bordering the western reaches of Paso Robles, the historic York Mountain AVA is home to the... critically acclaimed (and brilliantly named) Royal Nonesuch Farm. Here, owner and winemaker Anthony Yount is dedicated to making singular wines from this serene 3 hectare seven-acre vineyard at around 500m above sea level. Yet it's so much more than just vines: it is where three-generations of the Yount Family live and play; where they raise live-stock and grow fruits and vegetables. It's an oasis for flora and fauna, and this natural energy is reflected beautifully in wines. York Mountain is just 8 miles from the coastline, which provides a cooler climate and enough rain to mean the Estate can be dry-farmed year round. The thin soils sit on top of a wealth of limestone and chalk, framing Anthony's graceful reds with a shimmering vibrancy. Anthony makes three stunning reds on the Estate: the Royal Nonesuch Red is a fabulous blend that showcases fruit from across the vineyard, while the Hokum and Spine are pure varietals (Grenache and Syrah respectively). Considering how little is produced (440 of the Red and less than 100 each of the Hokum and Spine), and the excellent write-ups from Jeb Dunnuck, they represent incredible value.

2023 Seven Apart, Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

DE97TWP98
*Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot *Vintage production: 1,500 cases *There is no doubt at all: Seven Apart is a name that will soon be spoken of alongside the Napa's... Elite wineries. The Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon is based around a core of fruit from the Estate's Base Camp Vineyard, sprinkled with hand-picked barrels from Estate's Stags Ridge Vineyard. The resulting wine in 2023 is a gorgeous expression that, for us, shows a new side to Napa that we can't wait to bring to the UK's most discerning cellars. Stags Ridge Vineyard sits above the fog line at an elevation of 450 metres on Atlas Peak's rocky, red volcanic soils. The small berries on these 25 year old vines produce wines rich in colour, tannin, and concentration. Base Camp Vineyard, first planted between 1994 and 1998, surrounds the winery at the base of Atlas Peak in Soda Canyon, nestled alongside the famous Silverado Trail. The soils here consists of sand, clay, and gravel, giving the wines a rich structure and opulence. The grapes were hand harvested at night to ensure that the grapes come in cold in order to minimise oxidation. The grapes were then slowly fermented at cooler temperatures to help preserve aromas. Once the initial fermentation was completed, the wine was transferred to French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation takes place to soften and stabilise the wines. The wine was then racked off its lees and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (73% new) before bottling.

2023 Linne Calodo, Nemesis, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD98TWP97
*Blend: 84% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 4% Mourvèdre *Vintage production: 350 cases *In the words of Winemaker, Matt Trevisan: “When I first started Linne Calodo, people kept asking me why I didn’t... make a stand-alone Syrah. I began to see this question as my nemesis. Why were varietal wines still considered superior to blends? Why underestimate the complementary power of Grenache and Mourvèdre? So I created this wine called Nemesis, which is ironically all about grapes getting along.” The Nemesis comes predominantly from the Bandit Syrah and Backside Syrah blocks at the Estate Stonethrower Vineyard, complemented by Grenache from Stonethrower Vineyard and Mourvèdre from the main Linne Calodo Estate. Stonethrower Vineyard is located just 11.3 miles from the ocean at elevations reaching 411 metres. The Syrah here delivers a mix of high-toned fruit and meaty richness, while the Grenache brings a splash of fruit-forward acidity to the blend. The Mourvèdre from the Linne Calodo estate rounds out the wine with a firm tannin structure. The fruit was pressed into oak puncheons and small French oak barriques. The blend assembled in March following harvest and returned to large format puncheons and 228-liter and 265-liter French oak barrels (30% total new oak) for maturation. Total aging: 13 months.

2021 Linne Calodo, The Martian, Paso Robles Willow Creek District 1x75cl

*Blend: 71% Cabernet Sauvignon *Vintage production: 299 cases *Linne Calodo’s reputation was built squarely upon Zinfandel and Rhône varieties. The Martian, however, is Matt's platform for... playing with an alien ingredient: Cabernet Sauvignon. Add in a dash of Syrah, and you end up with something unexpected and unfamiliar, yet also meant to be. Sometimes the stranger becomes your ally. The Martian is the only wine where Matt leaves the 'terra firma' of his estate vineyards in search of Cabernet Sauvignon. He sources it from the nearby Lopai Ranch, where proprietor Brian Lopez grows some of the Willow Creek District’s most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, notable for its balance of full flavours and supple structure. To this, Matt adds a dash of Syrah from the lower reaches of the Stonethrower Estate. Here, Syrah achieves a cool-climate character that complements the Cabernet with a core of red fruit flavours and fresh acidity. The Estate fruit farmed with nature-positive viticulture emphasizing biodiversity, native lifeforms and species coexistence by way of no-till, permaculture and polyculture practices. Agricultural floor is managed through careful plant selection via hand-removal, mowing, and grazing. Soil health is managed through mulching, organic compost additions and animal grazing, including 48 head of sheep. All estate viticulture id performed by full-time, in-house Linne Calodo vineyard team. The Cabernet Sauvignon was pressed directly into French oak barrels (30% new), while the Syrah pressed direct to neutral French oak barrels. The final blend was assembled in March 2024 following harvest, then returned to neutral barrels, where it underwent extended aging for 24 months for optimal integration and maturation.
