2020 Haliotide, Topotero Vineyard Extra Brut Rosé, San Luis Obispo Coast 1x75cl

RP94
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 120 cases Disgorged: October 2023 When we heard about a Sparkling Wine producer from the very edges of the San Luis Obispo coastline, we just had to find... out. We met owners Nicole and Lucas at their boutique winery in the gorgeous hills just south of Paso. Nicole's winemaking experience of working at cooler-climate coastal sites, and Lucas's knowledge as one of Paso's most in-demand vineyard managers, makes them the dream team. Inspired by the great cuvées of Champagne, they adopted more of a 'Grower Champagne' approach by focusing on two exceptional vineyards (Stolo and Topotero) just a couple of miles from the ocean. This bracing environment produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of tension and acidity, but it's the California sunshine that gives them an extra dimension. Nicole and Lucas make three cuvées: the Extra-Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from Topotero and given 30 months tirage; a razor-sharp Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay from Stolo) that sees 4 years on its lees; and a beautifully-textured BdB Late-Disgorgement that sees around 6.5 years tirage. All wines are barrel-fermented, and the results are pure class. For us, they would sit admirably alongside some of the world's top Fizz, but it's more telling that every winemaker we spoke with was on Haliotide's allocation list (waiting list, for a few!), and ranked the wines as the best Sparkling Wines of North America. With just a couple of hundred cases made, there's only one course-of action: reserve some bottles now and find out for yourself why the hype is more than justified!

2021 Arista, UV El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

JD96JS97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 389 cases Arista's most distinctive wine is the El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay. The site rests on a ridgeline in the heart of the Russian River Valley AVA... that's cooled by the morning and evening coastal mists, yet bathed in glorious California sunshine for a few hours each day. Arista's vines are composed of Old Wente and Montrachet clones, on the vital Goldridge soils - a recipe that produces the most classical of wines: rich, intense, earthy, and loaded with fruit and spice, all balanced by a minerality and energy that showcases winemaker Matt Courtney's contemporary approach.

2019 O’Shaughnessy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain 6x75cl

JD98+
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5 % St. Macaire, 1% Carménère, 1% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 4,385 cases If ever a wine evoked the true spirit of... its surroundings, it would be the majestic O'Shaughnessy Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. As you ascend the scenic Deer Park Road from the Valley floor the air becomes crisp and clear, filling with notions of wild herbs, pine trees, and sequoia. The soil becomes darker and rockier as the ancient volcanic terrain takes over, and there's an overriding feeling of serenity and calmness. These feelings are mirrored in the O'Shaughnessy 2019's gorgeous fruit and aromatics, distinctive minerality, gorgeous purity, and underlying elegance. Jeb Dunnuck awarded O'Shaughnessy Estate's highest score to date, an impressive 98+ points, suggesting more to come from what he calls "An incredible wine, and it flirts with perfection." Famed for it's longevity, a future triple-point score isn't out of the question... O'Shaughnessy's Howell Mountain Estate surrounds the winery, flowing through three distinct sites: The Amphitheatre Vineyard derives its name from the way it caresses the dramatic hillside, and the Rancho Del Oso Vineyard take its name from a resident black bear! The latest addition is the Osprey's Nest Vineyard, just upslope from the winery, which is shared with a young family of Ospreys. At the hands in winemaker Sean Capiaux, these three parcels exemplify the unique diversity of Howell Mountain.

2022 Nid Tisse, Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 59 cases Nid-Tissé is already well on the way to being one of California’s most sought-after labels, and the naturally low production levels means... getting an allocation at release is essential. Owner and winemaker Marie-Laure Ammons studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy before moving to California where she was hand-picked by Philippe Melka to join his team. Following 18 years at Atelier Melka, gaining hands-on experience at California’s top vineyards, she took the next step in her career to start Nid-Tissé. With her inaugural 2019 vintage releases, Marie-Laure rocketed to the top with her mailing list becoming a waiting list in the blink of an eye. Sommeliers and buyers at the top Michelin-starred restaurants scrambled for an allocation, and the subsequent amazing scores fanned the flames! For her Chardonnays, Marie-Laure made no compromise in selecting two of the most famous names of all: from Hyde Vineyard in Napa’s Los Carneros (hence the connection with Chris Hyde!), she uses a rare selection of 32 and 29 year old vines, with the Nid-Tissé Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 spending 12 months in a combination of 67% new Burgundian French oak, and 33% custom made Italian clay amphora. Rich and intense with extraordinary complexity, coupled with superb energy and acidity, this is a modern-day Hyde classic. Further northwest, towards the coast, the historic Bacigalupi Vineyard lies in the heart of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Since the early 1970s, this site has been heralded as one of the most important in California, playing a winning role in a certain ‘Judgement of Paris’. While that was a significant moment in time, the wines produced there now are better than ever. Marie-Laure has access to the best block of Wente Clone vines, with the Nid-Tissé Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 seeing 16 months in a mixture of 80% old Burgundian French oak and 20% clay egg. The result is a gorgeous wine driven by texture and elegance.

2021 Arista, UV Lucky Well Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 6x75cl

JD97JS98
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 653 cases The Lucky Well vineyard sits atop a knoll on the western edge of the Sebastopol hills outside of the towns of Graton and Sebastopol. The area is... home to some of the most highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in the Russian River Valley due in large part to the perfect confluence of soil, climate, and elevation. The vineyard is in an area often referred to as the “banana belt” of the Russian River Valley because, though on the very coolest, foggiest, and western edge of the appellation, it sits on a knoll that rises above the fog line. This feature exposes the fruit to more gentle sunlight, which allows very slow and even ripening across the entire growing season. Arista's 4-acre section was planted in 2008 to Pommard, Swan, and Calera clones of Pinot Noir.

2021 Teeter-Totter, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 12x75cl

JD93
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 5% Charbano, 5% Zinfandel Vintage production: 6,000 cases Anyone who's drunk a Cabernet Sauvignon made by Benoit Touquette will know why he's... regarded as one of the greatest winemakers of his generation. With countless 100 point scores to his name, he's at the top of his game. So when he releases a Cab under his own label, it's a complete no-brainer! That makes his Teeter-Totter Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 one of the shrewdest buys from Napa, especially with Jeb Dunnuck saying "California needs more wines like this." With Teeter-Totter, Benoit gets to cherry pick fruit from his favourite vineyards throughout Napa. The result is a red that's both serious and complex, as well as delicious and moreish from the word go. In 2021, the final blend was 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the most famous and prestigious vineyards in Rutherford, with 5% each of Petite Sirah, Charbono and Zinfandel from Calistoga. It's in the classic Benoit-style with plenty of richness and opulence, with a great structure to carry it along.

2019 Dana Estates, VASO Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot, 1% Malbec, 1% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 6,647 Cases VASO is to Dana Estates what The Mascot is to Harlan Estate, BOND and... Promontory. Dana Estates' vineyards are ranked as “Some of the best sites in Napa Valley” by Robert Parker, and VASO is built around the younger vines and hand-picked barrels that really show-off the incredible range of flavours and aromatics at winemaker Chris Cooney’s disposal. Like the single-vineyard Cabs, only the precious free-run juice is used and there is as little intervention as possible by the team, allowing the terroir to shine through. The core of the VASO 2019 is from the Estate's Hershey Vineyard, just a stone's throw from Abreu's Las Posadas on Howell Mountain, complemented by fruit from their regal Lotus Vineyard – “Their First Growth terroir” (RP) – and historic Helms Vineyard which surrounds the winery in western Rutherford. The VASO is released with the optimum bottle age so it’s absolutely gorgeous to pop open straight away, while holding plenty of cellaring potential. We cannot recommend this showstopper of a Napa Cab highly enough.

You can lay back and enjoy the experience just as much as you can admire the craftsmanship that went into making them. The Red Blend is remarkable wine featuring the classic Bordeaux varietals - Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - yet it stands apart for the 40% of Malbec in the blend. 2021 Bevan Cellars, Ontogeny Red Wine, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JD98
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot. Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec Vintage production: 2,036 cases The key to this magical and dynamic blend is the vineyard sources: in addition to Sugarloaf... Mountain, Sage Ridge, and Wildfoote, the core of the fruit comes from blocks 5 and 7 in the Tench Vineyard which literally run alongside the fenceline of neighbouring Screaming Eagle - that's some serious terroir. Russell makes his selection in the cellar, picking single-vineyard barrels that are crying out to be blended together for an earlier drinking, hedonistic, and utterly delicious wine. The Ontogeny is a true cellar-barrel selection, and is always the last of the cuvées to be blended making each new release highly-anticipated!

2019 Bevan Cellars, Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 320 cases Russell Bevan is a Titan among Napa winemakers, and his incredible single vineyard reds from 'Grand Cru' sites including the Tench, Beckstoffer... Dr. Crane and Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyards are among the Valley's greatest. For those in the know it gets even more exciting with his ultra-rare Sonoma bottlings. These wines show the remarkable breadth of Russell's talent, and why the far western reaches of Sonoma are home to some of the most exciting Chardonnays in the World. The Ritchie Vineyard is one of the ‘Grand Crus’ of the Russian River Valley and is the source for some of THE best Chardonnays in California. The fruit is highly coveted by winemaking legends Mark Aubert and David Ramey, and Russell’s Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay is the most intense of them all. It’s a wine with bags of cellaring potential, yet its opulence is going to make it hard to resist opening early on. Russell Bevan: "Our 2019 Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay is a powerhouse. while we love to drink our Cabernets Sauvignons and red wine blends young, we have always enjoyed our chardonnays with some maturity. Of course, they are yummy when they are young, but they just have so much intensity that they shine even brighter with a little age. With this vintage we have crafted a wine that will draw a crowd, tomorrow and for years to come. Opulent, dynamic, it pulses key lime, pineapple and a kiss of stone fruit. This wine pulls no punches."
