2019 O’Shaughnessy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain 1x75cl

JD98+
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5 % St. Macaire, 1% Carménère, 1% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 4,385 cases If ever a wine evoked the true spirit of... its surroundings, it would be the majestic O'Shaughnessy Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. As you ascend the scenic Deer Park Road from the Valley floor the air becomes crisp and clear, filling with notions of wild herbs, pine trees, and sequoia. The soil becomes darker and rockier as the ancient volcanic terrain takes over, and there's an overriding feeling of serenity and calmness. These feelings are mirrored in the O'Shaughnessy 2019's gorgeous fruit and aromatics, distinctive minerality, gorgeous purity, and underlying elegance. Jeb Dunnuck awarded O'Shaughnessy Estate's highest score to date, an impressive 98+ points, suggesting more to come from what he calls "An incredible wine, and it flirts with perfection." Famed for it's longevity, a future triple-point score isn't out of the question... O'Shaughnessy's Howell Mountain Estate surrounds the winery, flowing through three distinct sites: The Amphitheatre Vineyard derives its name from the way it caresses the dramatic hillside, and the Rancho Del Oso Vineyard take its name from a resident black bear! The latest addition is the Osprey's Nest Vineyard, just upslope from the winery, which is shared with a young family of Ospreys. At the hands in winemaker Sean Capiaux, these three parcels exemplify the unique diversity of Howell Mountain.

2021 Arista, UV El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

JD96JS97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 389 cases Arista's most distinctive wine is the El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay. The site rests on a ridgeline in the heart of the Russian River Valley AVA... that's cooled by the morning and evening coastal mists, yet bathed in glorious California sunshine for a few hours each day. Arista's vines are composed of Old Wente and Montrachet clones, on the vital Goldridge soils - a recipe that produces the most classical of wines: rich, intense, earthy, and loaded with fruit and spice, all balanced by a minerality and energy that showcases winemaker Matt Courtney's contemporary approach.

2021 Argot, Bonny’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 1x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 150 cases Located at the northern border of the Oakville AVA, Bonny's Vineyard has been revered as a National Treasure since the 1970s. It's owned... by the Meyers Family and named after matriarch Bonny Myers, who was one of the founders of Silver Oak in 1972. The family grant access to a tiny handful of artisan winemakers with the caveat they can't name the vineyard of the bottle. Justin's growing reputation saw him offered a parcel of fruit in 2019, and upon tasting this first vintage Bonny declared it so good all future vintages should proudly declare the vineyard designation. Argot's 2021 is the first to do so, and represents not just an important moment in time, but a gorgeous expression of the gravelly, alluvial soils in this part of Oakville.

2019 Argot, Babel Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 3x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 50 cases The three single-vineyard Cabs (Bonny's Vineyard, Cuvée Leo, and Sage Ridge Vineyard) are sublime and unique in their styles, but what... could be more exciting that to cherry pick the best barrels for an uber-blend showcasing the very best of the best… In 2019, Justin knew he’d found his three ‘homes’ and was ready to make the selection, making the first vintage of ‘Babel’ Cabernet Sauvignon. Argot's grandest Cabernet Sauvignon is a cellar selection of the most complex and significantly fruited barrels, complemented by a profound tannin profile allowing for the benefits of a nearly 3-year elevage. Built from the ground up Babel is a towering proposition of a wine—provocative, pure and immediate. We could wax lyrical about the ‘Babel’ all day, but the responses of everyone we’d tried it with so far (including ourselves!) has spoken volumes: jaws to the floor, followed by minutes of silence and contemplation, routinely followed by expletive-laden praise! Justin very kindly reserve 60 bottles (in 3x75cl OWC) for us in the UK, making them the only cases available outside of his mailing list!

2022 Nid Tisse, Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 1x75cl

WI97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 59 cases Nid-Tissé is already well on the way to being one of California’s most sought-after labels, and the naturally low production levels means... getting an allocation at release is essential. Owner and winemaker Marie-Laure Ammons studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy before moving to California where she was hand-picked by Philippe Melka to join his team. Following 18 years at Atelier Melka, gaining hands-on experience at California’s top vineyards, she took the next step in her career to start Nid-Tissé. With her inaugural 2019 vintage releases, Marie-Laure rocketed to the top with her mailing list becoming a waiting list in the blink of an eye. Sommeliers and buyers at the top Michelin-starred restaurants scrambled for an allocation, and the subsequent amazing scores fanned the flames! For her Chardonnays, Marie-Laure made no compromise in selecting two of the most famous names of all: from Hyde Vineyard in Napa’s Los Carneros (hence the connection with Chris Hyde!), she uses a rare selection of 32 and 29 year old vines, with the Nid-Tissé Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 spending 12 months in a combination of 67% new Burgundian French oak, and 33% custom made Italian clay amphora. Rich and intense with extraordinary complexity, coupled with superb energy and acidity, this is a modern-day Hyde classic. Further northwest, towards the coast, the historic Bacigalupi Vineyard lies in the heart of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Since the early 1970s, this site has been heralded as one of the most important in California, playing a winning role in a certain ‘Judgement of Paris’. While that was a significant moment in time, the wines produced there now are better than ever. Marie-Laure has access to the best block of Wente Clone vines, with the Nid-Tissé Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 seeing 16 months in a mixture of 80% old Burgundian French oak and 20% clay egg. The result is a gorgeous wine driven by texture and elegance.

2021 Devil Proof, Farrow Ranch Cima Ladera, Alexander Valley 3x75cl

JD99RP98
Blend: 65% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 580 cases The Farrow Ranch vineyard is a unique and distinctive site with two incredible blocks of terroir worthy of adding to the Devil... Proof portfolio. This special wine is a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, making it's debut in 2021. Winemaker Jesse Katz (Aperture) carefully selected individual vines from these blocks to contribute to this blend. Each vine is hand harvested and brought into the winery within hours of being picked. The clusters are methodically and obsessively sorted down to the individual berry. Each vineyard block is separated and will cold soak for 5 days with minimal air incorporation, allowing for optimal extraction, flowed by cooler fermentations with native yeast. Oxygen and temperature are controlled throughout the 21-day fermentation and extended maceration is determined lot by lot as we walk the fine line of full extraction and elegant, silky textures. The Cima Ladera 2021 went through malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and are aged (sur-lees) for 22 months.

2021 Arista, UV Lucky Well Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 6x75cl

JD97JS98
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 653 cases The Lucky Well vineyard sits atop a knoll on the western edge of the Sebastopol hills outside of the towns of Graton and Sebastopol. The area is... home to some of the most highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in the Russian River Valley due in large part to the perfect confluence of soil, climate, and elevation. The vineyard is in an area often referred to as the “banana belt” of the Russian River Valley because, though on the very coolest, foggiest, and western edge of the appellation, it sits on a knoll that rises above the fog line. This feature exposes the fruit to more gentle sunlight, which allows very slow and even ripening across the entire growing season. Arista's 4-acre section was planted in 2008 to Pommard, Swan, and Calera clones of Pinot Noir.

2021 Realm Cellars, Farella Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JS98VM98WI97+
Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot Vintage production: 500 cases Farella Vineyard is Realm’s Estate vineyard in the Coombsville AVA. A fantastically complex site in the foothills of the Vaca... Mountain range, the vineyard lies in one of the cooler regions of the Napa Valley. The site features layers of volcanic tufa, red decomposed rock and ashy deposits from ancient landslides, vast geologic episodes that literally turned this vineyard on its head. The 25 acres of vines are divided into numerous blocks with elevations ranging between 300 and 500 feet. Varying slopes create distinct microclimates and soil compositions, and the vineyard’s diversity is suitable for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Realm has produced a Single Vineyard Cabernet from Farella since 2003. In 2018, they partnered with the Farella family on a plan to become long-term stewards of the estate. The core of Realm’s Farella Cabernet comes from a high point in the vineyard, a block referred to as “rockpile” because of the preponderance of stone and gravel in the soil. This block is bathed in afternoon sunlight during the growing season and the wine - concentrated and beautifully-structured - consistently shows a mix of red and black fruits with spice and mineral overtones. Farella has been historically 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, comprising Clones 4 and 8, but they began working with Merlot in the 2019 vintage. The 2021 Farella Vineyard introduces a new artwork on the label by Ethiopian-born artist Wosene Worke Kosrof. He uses contorted symbols of his native Amharic language to represent dance and movement in this artwork Heart of Dance. The label is a tribute to Frank Farella, a lover of music, dance and language, who founded Farella Vineyard in the mid-1970s.
