Benoit, a native of Bordeaux, also arrived in Napa Valley in the mid-2000s, having graduated from L’Université de Bordeaux with master’s degrees in Chemistry and Oenology. Like Scott, he had more promising and secure opportunities elsewhere, but they didn’t present the challenge or change he was looking for. With the advice and help of his good friend and mentor, the renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland, he moved to Napa Valley and soon landed an internship with winemaking consultant Andy Erickson. Benoit’s three-month internship eventually turned into a full-time position, and for the next few years – except for a harvest spent in South Africa – he worked side by side with Andy making wine for prestigious brands such as Dalla Valle, Ovid, and Screaming Eagle. It was a fantastic opportunity, one that allowed him to explore the diversity of vineyards throughout Napa Valley. In 2007, anxious to strike out on his own, Benoit formed his own consulting business. One of his first clients was Hartwell Estate Vineyards.

2022 Realm Cellars, Fidelio Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Sauvignon Blanc Production: 500 cases Realm Cellars' unerring dedication to perfection has seen their portfolio of Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons reach true 'Napa First Growth'... status. From Beckstoffer Dr. Crane to Moonracer, they are some of the Valley's elite wines and as collectible as it gets. There is one Single-Vineyard wine at Realm Cellars that stands apart for being the rarest of them all (only 500 cases produced), and representing the Estate's only white cuvée - Realm Cellars Fidelio Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is sourced from Realm's Farella Estate Vineyard in Coombsville. Winemaker Benoit Touquete used three different vessels (and materials) to age Fidelio – demi-muid neutral oak barrels, concrete eggs, and terracotta amphoras. Each vessel contributes to Fidelio’s unique layers, complexities, and depth. Benoit thinks the Fidelio 2022 has the freshness of Dagueneau and the richness of Château Mouton-Rothschild's Ygrec - the best of both worlds, and we thoroughly agree. It is a wine that captures perfectly the ethos of Realm – richness and freshness, at the same time.

2015 Realm Cellars, Moonracer Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JD97
Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot Vintage production: c.350 cases Realm's Moonracer Estate sits on Wappo Hill near the town of Yountville. At 170 metres... above sea level, it's the highest elevation point on the valley floor. Wappo Hill was named after the Native American tribe that was prevalent in the area long before California was a state. The Wappos believed in Animism, a spiritual idea that all the elements of the natural environment have a soul. The Moonracer name and label are an oblique reference to the earliest inhabitants of the place Realm now calls home. The Cabernet Sauvignon-based Moonracer is composed of the finest lots from the Estate vineyard. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has much to choose from, as the site, with its multiple blocks, elevations, facings and diverse soils, has character in spades. Moonracer bears the unmistakable mark of this stimulating vineyard as well as the Stags Leap District. The wine is strong and powerful yet elegant, with refined tannins and plenty of depth. It beautifully combines characteristics typical of northern and southern Napa Valley. For the label, Barcelona-based artist Sergio Albiac inserts data taken from weather stations at the Moonracer vineyard, including temperature, wind, and solar radiation, into an algorithm that produces abstract images based on the data. Each vintage of Moonracer is represented by data from that particular year, and each label is unique.

2021 Fait Main, Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard, Oakville 1x75cl

JD98+
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 375 cases From the eastern hillside of Oakville, the Fait-Main Tierra Roja Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 represents the reawakening of a... legendary Napa site, with owner Linda Neal giving Benoit exclusive access to this epic terroir. Look above and you’ll see Dalla Valle Vineyards; look down and there’s BOND St. Eden; crane your neck tot eh south, and Screaming Eagle and Tench Vineyard sit side-by-side. It’s Napa’s very own ‘Route des Grands Crus’. This is a stonkingly good wine and we expect high scores when the critics get their hands on a bottle, you’ll be getting this before them! Four Corners Wine: “This is a classical Cabernet from the very first aromatics, dripping with regal stature and poise. The notes of warm red earth could come from no other piece of Napa land, framed with wet clay, a bright floral lift, and a core of charcoal and pencil shavings, all wrapped within a broad spread of delicious fruit. The depth is astounding on the nose, as it is on the palate. At this early stage there's an almost primal feel to the incredible 'volcanic' tannins, as it builds to a stacked mid-palate and fantastic finish. Layers of dark chocolate and preserved black fruit only hint at the complexity of the wine. Given a few years to settle down in the cellar, this is destined for greatness and explores the nuances of hillside and Valley floor in riveting fashion. What a debut for Fait-Main!” (Sep. 2023)

2021 Fait Main, Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard, Napa Valley 1x75cl

JD100
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 300 cases The Fait-Main Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is a modern-day icon, and for our tastes is one of the best... Cabernets to date from this remarkable site in western St. Helena. It boasts the same rocky terroir as its famous neighbour, Dr. Crane, but is emerging to produce even more concentrated and mineral-driven Cabs, There are a small handful of winemakers who are granted access to this hallowed terroir and Benoit is right at the forefront. Four Corners Wine: "At the hands of the best winemakers Las Piedras is easily the equal of the nearby Dr. Crane Vineyard, and this has to be one of the finest examples there is. The nose is stunning, loaded with classic Las Piedras notes or roasted coffee beans, bags of graphite/stony minerality, a sprinkling of ground spices, and concentration to spare. On the palate - oh yeah! There's so much energy and tension, with masses of concentration and immaculate tannins. With immense depth, we absolutely love this, and with the balance of crisp fruit and juicy acidity bringing the verve, and a huge streak of ferrous-minerality on the finish, the is a Cabernet you'll find hard to resist opening second bottle straight away! Brilliant.” (Sep. 2023)

2019 Teeter-Totter, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 1x75cl

Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 5% Charbano, 5% Zinfandel Vintage production: n/a Anyone who's drunk a Cabernet Sauvignon made by Benoit Touquette will know why he's regarded as one... of the greatest winemakers of his generation. With countless 100 point scores to his name, he's at the top of his game. So when he releases a Cab under his own label, it's a complete no-brainer! That makes his Teeter-Totter Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 one of the shrewdest buys from Napa, especially with Jeb Dunnuck saying "It tastes as if it costs two to three times the price." With Teeter-Totter, Benoit gets to cherry pick fruit from his favourite vineyards throughout Napa. The result is a red that's both serious and complex, as well as delicious and moreish from the word go. Benoit described 2019 as a "100% drool-worthy vintage", and his final blend was 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from St Helena, Yountville and Rutherford; 5% each of Petite Sirah, Charbono and Zinfandel from Calistoga. It's in the classic Benoit-style with plenty of richness and opulence, with a great structure to carry it along.

2016 Realm Cellars, Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 1x75cl

JD100
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a There are few names as evocative as Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. It is considered by many as the ultimate expression of Napa Valley, and... one of the very best vineyards in the world. This site has produced some of the most revered wines in Napa’s history at the hands of the few elite winemakers granted access to these most precious of vines. The secret to the Beckstoffer To Kalon magic lies in its location in western Oakville on an ancient alluvial fan. It was described by Robert Parker as “A true Napa Valley first growth”, yet with 33 hectares under vine it’s significantly smaller than any of the five illustrious First Growths (Château Haut-Brion is the smallest with 55ha under vine). It has more in common with the regal Grand Crus of Burgundy, with less than 20 winemakers granted access. This allows for a beautiful spectrum of vineyard expression – each encapsulating the soul of the terroir while exuding the signature style of each winery. The site's history can be traced back to 1868, when Hamilton Crabb planted the first vines. Legendary grower Andy Beckstoffer purchased his 89 acres in 1993, beginning an intensive period of renovation, modernisation and replanting. In 2007 the property was placed under a land conservation easement that forever prohibits non-agricultural development. The thin topsoil of clay loam sits on riverbed gravels and volcanic rocks – a combination that results in classic minerality and a graphite streak found in the best Cabernets. The vineyard is at the perfect sweet-spot around halfway up the Valley, where it receives the ideal sunshine for ripening the fruit, giving the wines an unmistakable depth and density of dark fruit aromatics and flavours. It is also tempered by the cooling winds from the San Pablo Bay and a natural circulation from cool air cascading down the Mayacamas Mountains. This is key to the wine’s unmistakable energy and elegance.
