2021 Andremily, No. 10 Syrah, California 1x75cl

JD97-100RP97+WI96-98
Blend: 93% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 2% Viognier Vintage production: 900 cases The Andremily Syrah No. 10 2021 is a particularly special and poignant vintage for Jim Binns as it’s the 10th vintage of... Andremily, which began with the No. 1 Syrah 2012. It’s a vintage worthy of such a celebration, boasting a beautifully warm (but never hot) season and dry conditions, resulting in gorgeous small bunches which had time to mature slowly on the vines to add even more complexity. It is a masterpiece that “is going to flirt with perfection at maturity” in the eyes of Jeb Dununck (97-100pts). Jim’s own description is worth the admission alone: “This sultry temptress is sure to please with its soaring aromatics and rich full texture. It must be tasted to be believed.” It’s built around of core of Syrah from a line-up of top sites throughout the Central Coast, including White Hawk (Cat Canyon), Larner (Ballard Canyon), Harrison-Clarke (Ballard Canyon), Kimsey, and Alta Mesa (Santa Barbara County), and Slide Hill - Andremily’s first Estate Vineyard, in Edna Valley.

2021 Carter, Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon The O.G., Oakville 6x75cl

JD99
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a With low yields and intense concentration, 2021 turns out to be very good year for the ‘O.G.’ block of Beckstoffer To Kalon. This is a... dense and ethereal Napa Cabernet Sauvignon revealing gorgeous notes of black and blue berry, complex floral and earth undertones matched with an inky deep purple color. Sweet firm tannins integrate with a plush, persistent and prodigious palate that has both weight and richness. As with prior tannic vintages of this wine, the structure and power of the clone 337 from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard lends itself well to an extended decant or several years of bottle age to really spread its wings. This wine should hit its prime in 5 to 10 years and continue to age and become more complex for decades.

2021 Saxum, James Berry, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD95-97+
Blend: 53% Grenache, 31% Mataro, 6% Syrah, 6% Counoise, 4% Carignan Vintage production: 1,390 cases Saxum's James Berry Vineyard, planted by Justin's father, James Berry Smith, in the 1980s, is... renowned throughout California as a true ‘Grand Cru’, and the James Berry Red 2021 is dominated by Grenache of the highest order. This is a hugely energetic and almost ethereal expression of the vineyard, and looks set to be one of the longest lived vintages to date. NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “When we tasted the wines side by side to write these notes (I know, hard life!), Heather and I were struck by how elevated this wine was. Yes, it’s the only Grenache led wine in this Syrah dominated release, but it was just singing! These ‘21s have really snuck up on me. I have to admit that early in their lives I found them a little boring for lack of a better term. I now realize they were just late bloomers and their hidden charms are just now blossoming into something quite magical. They carry a weightlessness while simultaneously jam packed with so much substance. Does that even make sense? Anyways, I love them. I could throw some tasting notes out to you about this wine, but really you just have to taste it to understand what I’m trying to convey. It’s good.”

2021 Saxum, James Berry Vineyard White, Paso Robles 1x75cl

Blend: 44% Grenache Blanc, 29% Roussanne, 20% Chenin Blanc, 7% Chardonnay Vintage production: 347 cases The James Berry White stands as Saxum’s rarest cuvée and has garnered a cult-flowing among... Saxum aficionados. For us, the Grenache Blanc in Paso Robles is the best in the world, so it goes without saying that Justin’s is going to sit at the top of the tree! Always and eclectic blend, this is a rich and deep wine that shimmers with energy throughout. NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “I like to think that we are getting better and better at making this wine, or maybe our Grenache Blanc vines are producing better and better fruit, or maybe its just that ’21 was an exceptional year for whites. Whatever the reasons, I’m really enjoying our one and only white. (News flash, we have planted a couple small blocks of whites up at our new York Mountain planting, but that is 6 years away from any release.) If you have enjoyed our past whites I think you will like this one even better. Brought up in huge 600L demi-muid barrels, with 4 of the 6 being new, it spent a full 22 months on its lees before racking clean and bottling. It is full and rich, yet bright and lively. The magical combo I always look for in a white…actually in any wine really.”

2021 Devil Proof, Farrow Ranch Cima Ladera, Alexander Valley 3x75cl

RP98
Blend: 65% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 580 cases The Farrow Ranch vineyard is a unique and distinctive site with two incredible blocks of terroir worthy of adding to the Devil... Proof portfolio. This special wine is a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, making it's debut in 2021. Winemaker Jesse Katz (Aperture) carefully selected individual vines from these blocks to contribute to this blend. Each vine is hand harvested and brought into the winery within hours of being picked. The clusters are methodically and obsessively sorted down to the individual berry. Each vineyard block is separated and will cold soak for 5 days with minimal air incorporation, allowing for optimal extraction, flowed by cooler fermentations with native yeast. Oxygen and temperature are controlled throughout the 21-day fermentation and extended maceration is determined lot by lot as we walk the fine line of full extraction and elegant, silky textures. The Cima Ladera 2021 went through malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and are aged (sur-lees) for 22 months.

2021 Realm Cellars, Moonracer Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JS97VM97
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 830 cases Realm's Moonracer Estate sits on Wappo Hill near the town of Yountville. At 170 metres above sea level, it's the highest elevation point... on the valley floor. Wappo Hill was named after the Native American tribe that was prevalent in the area long before California was a state. The Wappos believed in Animism, a spiritual idea that all the elements of the natural environment have a soul. The Moonracer name and label are an oblique reference to the earliest inhabitants of the place Realm now calls home. The Cabernet Sauvignon-based Moonracer is composed of the finest lots from the Estate vineyard. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has much to choose from, as the site, with its multiple blocks, elevations, facings and diverse soils, has character in spades. Moonracer bears the unmistakable mark of this stimulating vineyard as well as the Stags Leap District. The wine is strong and powerful yet elegant, with refined tannins and plenty of depth. It beautifully combines characteristics typical of northern and southern Napa Valley. For the label, Barcelona-based artist Sergio Albiac inserts data taken from weather stations at the Moonracer vineyard, including temperature, wind, and solar radiation, into an algorithm that produces abstract images based on the data. Each vintage of Moonracer is represented by data from that particular year, and each label is unique.

2021 Realm Cellars, The Tempest, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JD98JS97WI97
Blend: 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec Vintage production: 830 cases The Tempest was one of the first wines, and the first Proprietary Blend, produced by Realm Cellars. At the time, it... seemed almost uncanny that they were able to access three grape varietals at the same time from the same vineyard; it was blind luck or perhaps the proverbial “perfect storm.” The resulting wine reflected a fierce determination to brave the storm as well as a new desire to realise the possibilities of Merlot. Fruit for The Tempest is sourced from the cooler-climate Oak Knoll and Coombsville AVAs in the south of Napa. By building The Tempest 2021 around a core of fruit from Realm's world class Farella Vineyard, Coombsville's greatest site, their decision has paid off big time with the most elegant, pure and structured vintage we've tried to date. Having worked with this historic site (formerly a component of Opus One) since 2003, and farming it themselves for many years, the Realm Cellars team knows it better than anyone. With the switch from 'tenants' to owners, it's now a certainly that this stunning new iteration of The Tempest is the blueprint for the Napa Merlot by which all others will be measured. To signify this change in direct from The Tempest, and new label was commissioned to U.K. artist Richard Twose. Twose works in the tradition of non-finito, where the artwork is carried only to a point, leaving observers to fill in the rest for themselves. This technique resonates with Realm, where the feeling is that wine is an art form that invites participation, allowing wine lovers to attach their own memories to each bottle.

2021 Bevan Cellars, Ontogeny Red Wine, Napa Valley 12x75cl

JD98
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot. Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec Vintage production: 2,036 cases The key to this magical and dynamic blend is the vineyard sources: in addition to Sugarloaf... Mountain, Sage Ridge, and Wildfoote, the core of the fruit comes from blocks 5 and 7 in the Tench Vineyard which literally run alongside the fenceline of neighbouring Screaming Eagle - that's some serious terroir. Russell makes his selection in the cellar, picking single-vineyard barrels that are crying out to be blended together for an earlier drinking, hedonistic, and utterly delicious wine. The Ontogeny is a true cellar-barrel selection, and is always the last of the cuvées to be blended making each new release highly-anticipated! Four Corners Wine: "The Ontogeny 2021 leads with beautiful aromatics, so lifted with tonnes of rich crunchy fruit, cassis, a floral streak, an almost gamey-ferrous frame with amazing depth. It's an 'oh yeah!' palate, rich and flamboyant, lots of dark chocolate notes and a super-concentrated core of fruit, all wrapped in soft tannins and great acidity. Delicious on all fronts!"
