2019 Saxum, Somnus, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD96-98
Blend: 33% Petite Sirah, 33% Syrah, 17% Graciano, 13% Touriga Nacional, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 610 cases A brand-new cuvée, we tasted the Somnus 2019 from barrel in 2022 (it was... simply label ‘XC’ for extended cellared), and even at that relatively early stage it was a mind-blowing experience. Our notes read: “Off the charts – this will be incredible!”, which almost feels like an understatement now. Named after the Greek God of Sleep, Somnus slumbered for an almost unheard of 44 months in barrel to tame the insane level of power and intensity, and Justin’s judgement was impeccable as it came together beautifully in time for bottling. For Saxum fans, this is as thrilling as it gets! NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “I finally get to introduce you to this new cuvée, Somnus, named after the Roman god of sleep, because this wine gets to sleep an extra year in barrel! 44 months it’s been slumbering away. Back in 2019 we had a couple of amazing lots in our cellar that were so unique, and so incredible, I really wanted to showcase them. The problem was they were also extremely structured. The original plan was to give them the 33 month elevage like Bone Rock and Rocket block, but when it came time to bottle it last year it was still too beastly. Think velvet glove in a iron gauntlet. We tucked it back in and let it sleep another whole year, and when it woke up this time, it blew us all away. It is something unique for sure. Still a beast, but something very special. Something that I believe could only happen here on the Central Coast. It is another wine in this line up that has to be tasted to be believed, but understand, it’s not for the faint of heart. It is Paso.”

2019 Haliotide, Stolo Vineyard Blanc de Blancs, San Luis Obispo Coast 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 63 cases Disgorged: February 2024 When we heard about a Sparkling Wine producer from the very edges of the San Luis Obispo coastline, we just had to find... out. We met owners Nicole and Lucas at their boutique winery in the gorgeous hills just south of Paso. Nicole's winemaking experience of working at cooler-climate coastal sites, and Lucas's knowledge as one of Paso's most in-demand vineyard managers, makes them the dream team. Inspired by the great cuvées of Champagne, they adopted more of a 'Grower Champagne' approach by focusing on two exceptional vineyards (Stolo and Topotero) just a couple of miles from the ocean. This bracing environment produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of tension and acidity, but it's the California sunshine that gives them an extra dimension. Nicole and Lucas make three cuvées: the Extra-Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from Topotero and given 30 months tirage; a razor-sharp Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay from Stolo) that sees 4 years on its lees; and a beautifully-textured BdB Late-Disgorgement that sees around 6.5 years tirage. All wines are barrel-fermented, and the results are pure class. For us, they would sit admirably alongside some of the world's top Fizz, but it's more telling that every winemaker we spoke with was on Haliotide's allocation list (waiting list, for a few!), and ranked the wines as the best Sparkling Wines of North America. With just a couple of hundred cases made, there's only one course-of action: reserve some bottles now and find out for yourself why the hype is more than justified!

2019 Peake Ranch, Bellis Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 1x75cl

JD96
Blend: 75% Syrah, 16% Grenache, 9% Pinot Noir Vintage Production: 557 cases If there's one wine that sums up why California is such a hotbed of innovation and excitement, it's the Peake Ranch Bellis... Noir 2019. It's a blend like no-other: with a dominance of Syrah and addition of Grenache it is a classic Central Coast recipe, but what makes it unique and utterly divine is a splash of Pinot Noir, all from the Estate Vineyards! Peake Ranch's wines are super hot-tickets, and the two Estate Vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills are highly prized by the region's top winemakers. The Peake Ranch Vineyard surrounds the winery in the far southeast of the AVA, counting Sine Qua Non's Eleven Confessions Vineyard as a neighbour. This historic site rises up from the valley floor into Santa Rosa Hills, a is home to some of the best Pinot Noir on the West Coast. John Sebastiano Vineyard has the perfect mix of cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean and Californian sunshine for producing amazing Syrah and Grenache. With the likes of Jim Binns (Andremily), Paul Lato (Paul Lato Wines), and Nik Krankl (Finger's Crossed) lining up for some fruit, it deserves it's 'Grand Cru' status. The mix of intense, aromatic Syrah with energetic, textured Grenache and Pinot may sound outrageous, but if the recipe works why deny it?!

2019 Mauritson Wines, Rockpile Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Rockpile 12x75cl

RP95
Blend: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, 10% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot Vintage production: 740 Straddling the ridge between the two arms of Lake Sonoma is the Rockpile AVA. One of the newest... appellations in California, Rockpile's location and history can be described in one word: dramatic! S.P. Hallengren, great-great-great grandfather of Founder & Owner Clay Mauritson, first planted vines on the Rockpile valley floor in 1884, shipping every ounce of his wine back to Sweden. The Family's Rockpile homestead and ranch grew to 1,600 hectares by the early 1960s, when all but 280 ridgetop hectares were taken by the Army Corps of Engineers in order to develop Lake Sonoma. The vineyards shown in many of the historic family photos are now under water. It was not until the early 1990s that the first acres of modern-era vines were planted and thrived, once it was discovered that Rockpile held great potential for ultra-premium mountain fruit. What makes Rockpile so unique? The AVA is located at the Northwest edge of Dry Creek Valley where the two regions actually overlap. All the vineyards within the Rockpile AVA range from between 240-600m in elevation. Although Rockpile is located just 13 miles from the coast, Lake Sonoma provides an inversion layer that prevents the heavier fog that typically blankets other Northern California appellations, allowing for longer, more consistent sun exposure. Moisture and daytime temperatures are regulated by howling coastal breezes and, in many cases, the steep slopes and rocky terrain require non-motorised vine management. Running through Mauritson's Rockpile Ridge Vineyards is the Healdsburg–Rogers Creek Fault, a dominant earthquake fault in Northern California, and you can see why the story of Rockpile is pure geo-political drama. Four Corners Wine: "Great Cabernet expression, yet quite unlike anything we've tried before. The nose has a great profile of bramble fruit with a really pure streak of cassis, underscored by a nice mellow minerality and the faintest of floral notes. It's all framed by layers of fresh tobacco and cedar. The palate is fascinating, with the most incredible tannins, great energy, a rich and velvety structure with bags of super intense blackcurrant and blackberry. The finish has great length, completing an utterly refined Cabernet bursting with personality. Fantastic now, with a good 15 years ageing potential." (Dec. 2022)

Estate, LEVY & McCLELLAN is one of Napa's A-list 'closed-door' wineries, producing ultra-rare wines (just 375 cases annually) exclusively available and winery-direct from Four Corners Wine in the UK. The duo produces two stunning cuvées from their Estate vineyard located high above Calistoga, both based around a core of Cabernet Sauvignon. The AMPERSAND contains a splash more Merlot in the blend, and tends to be the more expressive early on. They have an almost almost obsessive focus in the vineyard and winery, with each small lot managed individually, ensuring gentle extraction and barrel fermentation for extremely high-quality, refined tannins. They are one of the only wineries to ferment solely in 225L French oak barrels, using a labour-intensive method of placing each one on rollers to rotate it and gently mix the grapes with the fermenting juice. This process is customised for each individual lot and means it takes 3 to 4 barrels during fermentation to fill just one barrel for the aging of the wine.

Overlooking them all from the highest... point s one of the Estates that elevated Napa to the top of the global scene in the 1990s, Dalla Valle Vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine that it all began with back in 1986, when founders Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle introduced their hillside Estate Vineyard to the world with this debut vintage. It's the small addition of Cabernet Franc - which thrives in the iron rich volcanic soils, that sets this wine apart. While the 2018 vintage may have been a tough act to follow, the 2019s standout as another classic, idyllic Napa Valley vintage to remember. A milestone was reached at Dalla Valle in 2019 as they embraced the world of Biodynamic farming. Their deep love and connection to this land inspired them to begin this journey, and they have not looked back since. The elements of energy and vibrancy show in the 2019 vintage. A cool winter and mild rainy spring replenished the vines and provided them with the energy to sustain the heat of summer and perfectly ripen in the autumn.
