2016 Amuse Bouche, Red Blend, Napa Valley 6x75cl

RP95+
Blend: 88% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 750 cases Legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett and vintner John Schwartz started Amuse Bouche in 2002, taking inspiration from their shared... love of the great Châteaux of Pomerol to produce a Napa Merlot of elegance, poise and refinement that would deliver in spades at release while retaining great cellaring potential. The fruit comes from the secretive Amuse Bouche vineyards, hidden in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains above Napa's Rutherford AVA. They have the perfect combination of clay, gravel and volcanic soils, giving the Amuse Bouche its unmistakable complexity and structure.

2016 Soliste, Forêt Pinot Noir, Sonoma County 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage Production: 193 cases Forêt comes from a magnificent secluded vineyard near Occidental. The hillside vineyard has a northeastern exposure, a very steep slope, and is... in the middle of a spectacular redwood forest. Just 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean on the western coastal range, is perhaps the most visually stunning vineyard which Soliste uses – the depth of aromatics and spice in Forêt are a pure reflection of this truly unique vineyard’s site, slope, climate, and clone. Don Plumley & Claude Koeberle: "Deep hues of dark plums, cassis, boysenberries with brilliant amethyst gemstone, showing specs of skin pulp and minerals, which denotes whole cluster press extraction. Forêt’s alluring nose is a complex bouquet of blackcurrants, graphite mineral, black pepper, plums, Bing cherries, interlaced redwood pine needles. As the wines open up, profound aromas of dark fruit compote, licorice, spiked with Alpine forest smells, burnt orange peel, elevate the wine to an Amaro like infusion. Decanting is a must for this wine to appreciate all of its subtilities. The front palate is exceptionally voluptuous and textural, with pure concentration of blackberries, dark cherries, boysenberries, and candied violets, all lifted by dried herbal and evergreen forest. The mid-palate possesses an immensely concentrated core of dark fruit compote, framed by the rich structuring tannins created by our commitment to the whole cluster press. As the wine opens up, the luscious, exotic dark fruit elixir is layered with pulpy tannins adding earthy tones, gaminess, exotic spices, mint, and black pepper, all in perfect harmony. The finish is impressive in its length, focus and complexity. The whole clusters are definitely present, chewy, grippy, pulling the richness of the fruit into an aristocratic elegance. Bright acidity of red tart cherries, cranberry, and violet, infused with wet stone minerals lift the mid-palate fruit density, elongating the wine into a perpetual finish."

2016 Realm Cellars, Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 1x75cl

JD100
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a There are few names as evocative as Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. It is considered by many as the ultimate expression of Napa Valley, and... one of the very best vineyards in the world. This site has produced some of the most revered wines in Napa’s history at the hands of the few elite winemakers granted access to these most precious of vines. The secret to the Beckstoffer To Kalon magic lies in its location in western Oakville on an ancient alluvial fan. It was described by Robert Parker as “A true Napa Valley first growth”, yet with 33 hectares under vine it’s significantly smaller than any of the five illustrious First Growths (Château Haut-Brion is the smallest with 55ha under vine). It has more in common with the regal Grand Crus of Burgundy, with less than 20 winemakers granted access. This allows for a beautiful spectrum of vineyard expression – each encapsulating the soul of the terroir while exuding the signature style of each winery. The site's history can be traced back to 1868, when Hamilton Crabb planted the first vines. Legendary grower Andy Beckstoffer purchased his 89 acres in 1993, beginning an intensive period of renovation, modernisation and replanting. In 2007 the property was placed under a land conservation easement that forever prohibits non-agricultural development. The thin topsoil of clay loam sits on riverbed gravels and volcanic rocks – a combination that results in classic minerality and a graphite streak found in the best Cabernets. The vineyard is at the perfect sweet-spot around halfway up the Valley, where it receives the ideal sunshine for ripening the fruit, giving the wines an unmistakable depth and density of dark fruit aromatics and flavours. It is also tempered by the cooling winds from the San Pablo Bay and a natural circulation from cool air cascading down the Mayacamas Mountains. This is key to the wine’s unmistakable energy and elegance.

2016 Blankiet Estate, Paradise Hills Vineyard Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 6x75cl

VM98
Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1.5% Petit Verdot Vintage production: 605 cases Blankiet Estate is nestled above Yountville on the western foothills of the Mayacamas... Mountains. ?The Paradise Hills Vineyard is carved on steep hillsides just above the famed Dominus Estate Napanook parcel that was originally planted in 1838 by Yountville’s founder, George C. Yount. With an ideal eastern exposure, the land is bathed with morning sun and benefits from natural shade in the hot afternoons, and cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay flow constantly across the land. It's located on three volcanic knolls where soil profiles vary from deeply fractured rocks and volcanic ash, to thick clay deposits, meaning each parcel is distinguished by a unique subsoil and microclimate. At just 6.5 hectares in size it's a remarkably small site, yet the incredible complexity of the terroir allows for three distinct wines, each of a singular style. This is an Estate at the top of its game. Combined with the very talented winemaker Graeme MacDonald and owner Claude Blankiet's attention to detail, is truly worthy of an exploration.

2016 Downstream Box Set (3x75cl + 1x150cl), Paso Robles 5x75cl

JD97
Blend: 76% Zinfandel, 8% Syrah, 6% Mataró, 6% Petite Sirah, 4% Tempranillo Production: 230 cases Founded in 2016, Downstream Wines is the collective brainchild of Saxum Vineyards owner and... winemaker Justin Smith, the late-great oenologist Philippe Cambie, and their mutual friend, the visionary Sasha Verhage. Together, they crafted a wine that will be remembered forever as watershed moment in Paso Robles, and California as a whole. When it comes to pushing the boundaries of greatness, their jaw-dropping Downstream is a magical wine. In the running as the greatest expression of Zinfandel ever produced, it's a peerless example of Cambie's unrivalled blending skills and Smith's rockstar winemaking. It also carries a real poignance as to honour the legacy of Cambie, following his passing in 2021, production was ended. Cambie's work in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is legendary, none more so than his multiple 100-point scores at Clos St. Jean. He had long desired to work with Justin in Paso Robles, focusing on 'heritage' Zinfandel. They chose the old vines of the Dusi Vineyard, planted in 1945, complimenting them with a carefully selected blend of varietals from sites including Saxum's own James Berry Vineyard.  The result is a taste and style that can only come from California: rich, intense, hedonistic, with an underlying elegance and energy. It's indicative of the forward thinking and ground breaking approach that's at its strongest in Paso Robles. Downstream is already a highly desirable and ultra-rare gem, and will be a treasured prize among collectors of California's finest wines who are lucky enough to find some.

2016 Realm Cellars, Moonracer Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JS98VM97
Blend: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot Vintage production: n/a Realm's Moonracer Estate sits on Wappo Hill near the town of Yountville. At 170 metres above... sea level, it's the highest elevation point on the valley floor. Wappo Hill was named after the Native American tribe that was prevalent in the area long before California was a state. The Wappos believed in Animism, a spiritual idea that all the elements of the natural environment have a soul. The Moonracer name and label are an oblique reference to the earliest inhabitants of the place Realm now calls home. The Cabernet Sauvignon-based Moonracer is composed of the finest lots from the Estate vineyard. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has much to choose from, as the site, with its multiple blocks, elevations, facings and diverse soils, has character in spades. Moonracer bears the unmistakable mark of this stimulating vineyard as well as the Stags Leap District. The wine is strong and powerful yet elegant, with refined tannins and plenty of depth. It beautifully combines characteristics typical of northern and southern Napa Valley. For the label, Barcelona-based artist Sergio Albiac inserts data taken from weather stations at the Moonracer vineyard, including temperature, wind, and solar radiation, into an algorithm that produces abstract images based on the data. Each vintage of Moonracer is represented by data from that particular year, and each label is unique.
