2015 Realm Cellars, Moonracer Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JD97
Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot Vintage production: c.350 cases Realm's Moonracer Estate sits on Wappo Hill near the town of Yountville. At 170 metres... above sea level, it's the highest elevation point on the valley floor. Wappo Hill was named after the Native American tribe that was prevalent in the area long before California was a state. The Wappos believed in Animism, a spiritual idea that all the elements of the natural environment have a soul. The Moonracer name and label are an oblique reference to the earliest inhabitants of the place Realm now calls home. The Cabernet Sauvignon-based Moonracer is composed of the finest lots from the Estate vineyard. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has much to choose from, as the site, with its multiple blocks, elevations, facings and diverse soils, has character in spades. Moonracer bears the unmistakable mark of this stimulating vineyard as well as the Stags Leap District. The wine is strong and powerful yet elegant, with refined tannins and plenty of depth. It beautifully combines characteristics typical of northern and southern Napa Valley. For the label, Barcelona-based artist Sergio Albiac inserts data taken from weather stations at the Moonracer vineyard, including temperature, wind, and solar radiation, into an algorithm that produces abstract images based on the data. Each vintage of Moonracer is represented by data from that particular year, and each label is unique.

2015 Soliste, Solitaire Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage Production: 67 cases In Burgundy, a winemaker may reserve a special barrel for friends and family. They call this barrel Soliste. The Solitaire Pinot Noir is... co-founders Don Plumley and Claude Koeberle's ode to this concept, with a single-barrel given an extended ageing of 20 months to produce one of Sonoma’s most riveting wines. The fruit for Solitaire is sourced from the Guidici Vineyard, hidden among the redwoods near Occidental in the western reaches of Sonoma. It’s the pinnacle of Soliste’s unique ‘Monoclone’ programme: a single clone from a single vineyard, aged in a single cooperage to craft extraordinary wine that exemplifies their identity and sense of place. Four Corners Wine: “The most deliciously classic Pinot aromatics soar from the glass, with rich undertones of mushroom, dried lavender, and crushed rosemary leading bright sparks of preserved cherries and a hint of white balsamic. With air, even more layers emerge with plums, and an almost cocoa/earthy note adding further depth. On the palate, the concentrated core opens to reveal crystal clean notes of crunchy red berries, a light dusting of earthy spices, building to a velvety core of gorgeous tannin and a crisp finish. It builds and builds with time in the glass, and will be an utter joy to open anytime over the coming 10+ years. What a wine!” (Nov. 2021)

2015 Realm Cellars, Farella Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 6x75cl

JD97+RP98
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a Farella Vineyard is Realm’s Estate vineyard in the Coombsville AVA. A fantastically complex site in the foothills of the Vaca Mountain range,... the vineyard lies in one of the cooler regions of the Napa Valley. The site features layers of volcanic tufa, red decomposed rock and ashy deposits from ancient landslides, vast geologic episodes that literally turned this vineyard on its head. The 25 acres of vines are divided into numerous blocks with elevations ranging between 300 and 500 feet. Varying slopes create distinct microclimates and soil compositions, and the vineyard’s diversity is suitable for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Realm has produced a Single Vineyard Cabernet from Farella since 2003. In 2018, they partnered with the Farella family on a plan to become long-term stewards of the estate. The core of Realm’s Farella Cabernet comes from a high point in the vineyard, a block referred to as “rockpile” because of the preponderance of stone and gravel in the soil. This block is bathed in afternoon sunlight during the growing season and the wine - concentrated and beautifully-structured - consistently shows a mix of red and black fruits with spice and mineral overtones. Farella has been historically 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, comprising Clones 4 and 8, but they began working with Merlot in the 2019 vintage.

2015 Realm Cellars, Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 1x75cl

JD100
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 325 cases There are few names as evocative as Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. It is considered by many as the ultimate expression of Napa Valley,... and one of the very best vineyards in the world. This site has produced some of the most revered wines in Napa’s history at the hands of the few elite winemakers granted access to these most precious of vines. The secret to the Beckstoffer To Kalon magic lies in its location in western Oakville on an ancient alluvial fan. It was described by Robert Parker as “A true Napa Valley first growth”, yet with 33 hectares under vine it’s significantly smaller than any of the five illustrious First Growths (Château Haut-Brion is the smallest with 55ha under vine). It has more in common with the regal Grand Crus of Burgundy, with less than 20 winemakers granted access. This allows for a beautiful spectrum of vineyard expression – each encapsulating the soul of the terroir while exuding the signature style of each winery. The site’s history can be traced back to 1868, when Hamilton Crabb planted the first vines. Legendary grower Andy Beckstoffer purchased his 89 acres in 1993, beginning an intensive period of renovation, modernisation and replanting. In 2007 the property was placed under a land conservation easement that forever prohibits non-agricultural development. The thin topsoil of clay loam sits on riverbed gravels and volcanic rocks – a combination that results in classic minerality and a graphite streak found in the best Cabernets. The vineyard is at the perfect sweet-spot around halfway up the Valley, where it receives the ideal sunshine for ripening the fruit, giving the wines an unmistakable depth and density of dark fruit aromatics and flavours. It is also tempered by the cooling winds from the San Pablo Bay and a natural circulation from cool air cascading down the Mayacamas Mountains. This is key to the wine’s unmistakable energy and elegance.
