2019 Saxum, Somnus, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD96-98
Blend: 33% Petite Sirah, 33% Syrah, 17% Graciano, 13% Touriga Nacional, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 610 cases A brand-new cuvée, we tasted the Somnus 2019 from barrel in 2022 (it was... simply label ‘XC’ for extended cellared), and even at that relatively early stage it was a mind-blowing experience. Our notes read: “Off the charts – this will be incredible!”, which almost feels like an understatement now. Named after the Greek God of Sleep, Somnus slumbered for an almost unheard of 44 months in barrel to tame the insane level of power and intensity, and Justin’s judgement was impeccable as it came together beautifully in time for bottling. For Saxum fans, this is as thrilling as it gets! NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “I finally get to introduce you to this new cuvée, Somnus, named after the Roman god of sleep, because this wine gets to sleep an extra year in barrel! 44 months it’s been slumbering away. Back in 2019 we had a couple of amazing lots in our cellar that were so unique, and so incredible, I really wanted to showcase them. The problem was they were also extremely structured. The original plan was to give them the 33 month elevage like Bone Rock and Rocket block, but when it came time to bottle it last year it was still too beastly. Think velvet glove in a iron gauntlet. We tucked it back in and let it sleep another whole year, and when it woke up this time, it blew us all away. It is something unique for sure. Still a beast, but something very special. Something that I believe could only happen here on the Central Coast. It is another wine in this line up that has to be tasted to be believed, but understand, it’s not for the faint of heart. It is Paso.”

2019 Booker, Fracture Syrah, Paso Robles 6x75cl

Blend: 100% Syrah Vintage production: 867 cases Often described as a Booker flagship, Fracture is one of the world’s great Syrahs. Only the softest Syrah in barrel makes the cut for this dense and... powerful wine. The namesake pays homage to the calcareous soil in the Booker Vineyard, which limestone causes to ‘fracture’. The 2019 was aged for 18months in 70% new and 30% neutral French oak.

Blend: 33% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 28% Mourvèdre, 5% Tannat, 4% Petite Sirah Vintage production: 747 cases Oublié’s blend is always Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre – Booker's California ode to... Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The namesake is a play on the French term for “forgotten”. Rhône varietals grow beautifully on the Estate and winemaker Eric believes that they are far-too-often forgotten when you think of a California wine.

2017 Haliotide, Stolo Vineyard Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged, San Luis Obispo Coast 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 40 cases Disgorged: February 2024 When we heard about a Sparkling Wine producer from the very edges of the San Luis Obispo coastline, we just had to find... out. We met owners Nicole and Lucas at their boutique winery in the gorgeous hills just south of Paso. Nicole's winemaking experience of working at cooler-climate coastal sites, and Lucas's knowledge as one of Paso's most in-demand vineyard managers, makes them the dream team. Inspired by the great cuvées of Champagne, they adopted more of a 'Grower Champagne' approach by focusing on two exceptional vineyards (Stolo and Topotero) just a couple of miles from the ocean. This bracing environment produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of tension and acidity, but it's the California sunshine that gives them an extra dimension. Nicole and Lucas make three cuvées: the Extra-Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from Topotero and given 30 months tirage; a razor-sharp Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay from Stolo) that sees 4 years on its lees; and a beautifully-textured BdB Late-Disgorgement that sees around 6.5 years tirage. All wines are barrel-fermented, and the results are pure class. For us, they would sit admirably alongside some of the world's top Fizz, but it's more telling that every winemaker we spoke with was on Haliotide's allocation list (waiting list, for a few!), and ranked the wines as the best Sparkling Wines of North America. With just a couple of hundred cases made, there's only one course-of action: reserve some bottles now and find out for yourself why the hype is more than justified!

2019 Peake Ranch, Bellis Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 1x75cl

JD96
Blend: 75% Syrah, 16% Grenache, 9% Pinot Noir Vintage Production: 557 cases If there's one wine that sums up why California is such a hotbed of innovation and excitement, it's the Peake Ranch Bellis... Noir 2019. It's a blend like no-other: with a dominance of Syrah and addition of Grenache it is a classic Central Coast recipe, but what makes it unique and utterly divine is a splash of Pinot Noir, all from the Estate Vineyards! Peake Ranch's wines are super hot-tickets, and the two Estate Vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills are highly prized by the region's top winemakers. The Peake Ranch Vineyard surrounds the winery in the far southeast of the AVA, counting Sine Qua Non's Eleven Confessions Vineyard as a neighbour. This historic site rises up from the valley floor into Santa Rosa Hills, a is home to some of the best Pinot Noir on the West Coast. John Sebastiano Vineyard has the perfect mix of cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean and Californian sunshine for producing amazing Syrah and Grenache. With the likes of Jim Binns (Andremily), Paul Lato (Paul Lato Wines), and Nik Krankl (Finger's Crossed) lining up for some fruit, it deserves it's 'Grand Cru' status. The mix of intense, aromatic Syrah with energetic, textured Grenache and Pinot may sound outrageous, but if the recipe works why deny it?!

Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 550 cases Larry Hyde is the King of Chardonnay growers in California. A Chardonnay with 'Hyde Vineyard' on the label is of an assured 'Grand Cru' level, yet the story gets even more compelling. In 2005, Larry took the leap from grower to winemaker and planted his family's new Estate Vineyard, described by Mark Aubert as “Where Burgundy meets California” – a brilliant summation of the Larry Hyde 'Hyde Vineyard Estate' Chardonnay produced from this remarkable site.

2018 Blankiet Estate, Paradise Hills Vineyard Prince of Hearts Red, Napa Valley 1x75cl

Blend: 49% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot Vintage production: 1,100 cases Blankiet Estate is nestled above Yountville on the western foothills of the Mayacamas... Mountains. The Paradise Hills Vineyard is carved on steep hillsides just above the famed Dominus Estate Napanook parcel that was originally planted in 1838 by Yountville’s founder, George C. Yount. With an ideal eastern exposure, the land is bathed with morning sun and benefits from natural shade in the hot afternoons, and cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay flow constantly across the land. It's located on three volcanic knolls where soil profiles vary from deeply fractured rocks and volcanic ash, to thick clay deposits, meaning each parcel is distinguished by a unique subsoil and microclimate. At just 6.5 hectares in size it's a remarkably small site, yet the incredible complexity of the terroir allows for three distinct wines, each of a singular style. This is an Estate at the top of its game. Combined with the very talented winemaker Graeme MacDonald and owner Claude Blankiet's attention to detail, is truly worthy of an exploration.

Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Production: 150 cases The Scherrer Estate Vineyard surrounding the family’s farm and house in Alexander Valley, at the base of the Vaca Mountains. Four Corners... Wine: "The 2018 is a beautifully distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon. The aromatics are loaded with minerality and exotic sandalwood, super-high notes of dark chocolate and floral coffee beans, unusual yet utterly captivating and refined. The palate boasts an incredible structure, coiled and full of tension and energy. With air, layers of pure reds fruits emerge with an elemental-mineral undertone. Notes of toasted fennel seeds and cassis emerge on the long finish. This has masses of cellaring potential, and pushes the envelope for Sonoma Cabernets. In a word: stunning."

2019 Mauritson Wines, Rockpile Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Rockpile 12x75cl

RP95
Blend: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, 10% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot Vintage production: 740 Straddling the ridge between the two arms of Lake Sonoma is the Rockpile AVA. One of the newest... appellations in California, Rockpile's location and history can be described in one word: dramatic! S.P. Hallengren, great-great-great grandfather of Founder & Owner Clay Mauritson, first planted vines on the Rockpile valley floor in 1884, shipping every ounce of his wine back to Sweden. The Family's Rockpile homestead and ranch grew to 1,600 hectares by the early 1960s, when all but 280 ridgetop hectares were taken by the Army Corps of Engineers in order to develop Lake Sonoma. The vineyards shown in many of the historic family photos are now under water. It was not until the early 1990s that the first acres of modern-era vines were planted and thrived, once it was discovered that Rockpile held great potential for ultra-premium mountain fruit. What makes Rockpile so unique? The AVA is located at the Northwest edge of Dry Creek Valley where the two regions actually overlap. All the vineyards within the Rockpile AVA range from between 240-600m in elevation. Although Rockpile is located just 13 miles from the coast, Lake Sonoma provides an inversion layer that prevents the heavier fog that typically blankets other Northern California appellations, allowing for longer, more consistent sun exposure. Moisture and daytime temperatures are regulated by howling coastal breezes and, in many cases, the steep slopes and rocky terrain require non-motorised vine management. Running through Mauritson's Rockpile Ridge Vineyards is the Healdsburg–Rogers Creek Fault, a dominant earthquake fault in Northern California, and you can see why the story of Rockpile is pure geo-political drama. Four Corners Wine: "Great Cabernet expression, yet quite unlike anything we've tried before. The nose has a great profile of bramble fruit with a really pure streak of cassis, underscored by a nice mellow minerality and the faintest of floral notes. It's all framed by layers of fresh tobacco and cedar. The palate is fascinating, with the most incredible tannins, great energy, a rich and velvety structure with bags of super intense blackcurrant and blackberry. The finish has great length, completing an utterly refined Cabernet bursting with personality. Fantastic now, with a good 15 years ageing potential." (Dec. 2022)
