2019 Dana Estates, Lotus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 1x150cl
JD100VM100
Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot
Vintage production: 372 cases
Hailed by Robert Parker as “Their First Growth Terroir”, Lotus is situated at the northern reaches of Howell... Mountain, and presents the challenge of farming slopes ranging from 35° to 40°, at an elevation of 365 metres above sea level. Given these extreme aspects, the farming here is all painstakingly performed by hand. The entirety of the vineyard is planted on core stone bedrock and is 95% dry-farmed. The bedrock just beneath the surface causes the vines' roots to struggle in the search for water below, resulting in a Cabernet that is compelling for its power, intensity, vibrancy, and tension.

Surrounding the winery in western Rutherford, this gently sloping site is relatively cool, and is protected from the intensity of the... late afternoon heat during the height of the growing season. The gravelly loam soils provide excellent drainage and wonderful fruit purity. Helms Vineyard Cabernet displays the classic profile of the Rutherford Bench: dark fruit, richly layered with a touch of spice and earth. The finely grained ‘dusty’ tannins so prevalent in the appellation are integrated and harmonious, producing a wine of sophistication and depth.

While Lail's J. Daniel Cuvée is one of Napa's elite Cabs, their most complete expression of the Valley is the... Blueprint Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a refined, inviting, and highly complex wine that will never fail to impress.
Like the J. Daniel, the fruit is sourced from a hand-picked selection of Vineyards, combining their favourite sites from Diamond Creek in the north to Coombsville in the south. It is a highly personal look at what 'Napa Cabernet' means to Robin and Philippe, and demonstrates why it is one of the most exciting regions in the world.

Blend: 100% Chardonnay
Vintage production: 417 cases
L’Age D’Or comes from a vineyard just north of Sebastopol adjacent to the Laguna de Santa Rosa, the largest tributary of the Russian River.... Originally planted in 1971, these are among the oldest Chardonnay vines in the Russian River Valley. The vineyard is immaculately and sustainably managed.
Having white Burgundies as benchmarks, especially the wines of Raveneau, Jobard and Coche-Dury, Don and Claude were never to anxious to even attempt to craft Chardonnay in the new world as they had always felt that the wines were sometimes over the top with buttery pop corn mouth feel, way too much oak, high alcohol and clunky.
Their success with Sauvignon Blanc, and especially with St. Andelain, convinced them to begin a three year commitment with a fabulous, well-established vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Their willingness to experiment with different vinification as well as aging for 16 months in 600L thick stave barrels (44% new) results in a Chardonnay of great elegance, length and verve; very Meursault-like.

Forêt comes from a magnificent secluded vineyard near Occidental. The hillside vineyard has a northeastern exposure, a very steep slope, and is... in the middle of a spectacular redwood forest. Just 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean on the western coastal range, is perhaps the most visually stunning vineyard which Soliste uses – the depth of aromatics and spice in Forêt are a pure reflection of this truly unique vineyard’s site, slope, climate, and clone.
Don Plumley & Claude Koeberle: "Deep hues of dark plums, cassis, boysenberries with brilliant amethyst gemstone, showing specs of skin pulp and minerals, which denotes whole cluster press extraction. Forêt’s alluring nose is a complex bouquet of blackcurrants, graphite mineral, black pepper, plums, Bing cherries, interlaced redwood pine needles. As the wines open up, profound aromas of dark fruit compote, licorice, spiked with Alpine forest smells, burnt orange peel, elevate the wine to an Amaro like infusion. Decanting is a must for this wine to appreciate all of its subtilities. The front palate is exceptionally voluptuous and textural, with pure concentration of blackberries, dark cherries, boysenberries, and candied violets, all lifted by dried herbal and evergreen forest. The mid-palate possesses an immensely concentrated core of dark fruit compote, framed by the rich structuring tannins created by our commitment to the whole cluster press. As the wine opens up, the luscious, exotic dark fruit elixir is layered with pulpy tannins adding earthy tones, gaminess, exotic spices, mint, and black pepper, all in perfect harmony. The finish is impressive in its length, focus and complexity. The whole clusters are definitely present, chewy, grippy, pulling the richness of the fruit into an aristocratic elegance. Bright acidity of red tart cherries, cranberry, and violet, infused with wet stone minerals lift the mid-palate fruit density, elongating the wine into a perpetual finish."

The Amoenus Vineyard is one of Napa's most treasured sites among the top winemakers, and has been one of Maybach's stemmed single-vineyard... since 2009. This remarkable site is far off the beaten track, in the far north of Calistoga. It is tempered by cooling breezes funnelled through the Chalk Hill Gap to the north, helping the fruit retain acidity and freshness to balance with the gorgeously intense fruit.

Santa Barbara County is the new frontier for West Coast Cabernet Sauvignon, with the cooling influence of... the Pacific Ocean brining a level of elegance and refinement that make the wines stand out. By far, the leading winery is Crown Point Vineyards in Happy Canyon at the most easterly part of the region. Here, another young and uber-talented talented French winemaker, Simon Faury, has made his home under the Californian sunshine, and is taking this remarkable Estate into the big leagues of Cabernet producers.
Crown Point's calling card wine is their sublime Relevant Cabernet Sauvignon. It paints the complete picture of the Estate with around 80% Cabernet Sauvignon complimented by 10% Merlot, and a splash each of Petit Verdot and Malbec. The classic 'Bordeaux blend'.

Blankiet Estate is nestled above Yountville on the western foothills of the Mayacamas... Mountains. ?The Paradise Hills Vineyard is carved on steep hillsides just above the famed Dominus Estate Napanook parcel that was originally planted in 1838 by Yountville’s founder, George C. Yount.
With an ideal eastern exposure, the land is bathed with morning sun and benefits from natural shade in the hot afternoons, and cool breezes from the San Pablo Bay flow constantly across the land. It's located on three volcanic knolls where soil profiles vary from deeply fractured rocks and volcanic ash, to thick clay deposits, meaning each parcel is distinguished by a unique subsoil and microclimate.
At just 6.5 hectares in size it's a remarkably small site, yet the incredible complexity of the terroir allows for three distinct wines, each of a singular style. This is an Estate at the top of its game. Combined with the very talented winemaker Graeme MacDonald and owner Claude Blankiet's attention to detail, is truly worthy of an exploration.

Vintner Tom Futo and his winemaker Jason Exposto have a nose for 'Grand Cru' terroir,... with FUTO's Oakville Estate and 5500 Stags Leap District Estate Vineyards renowned for producing stunning Cabernet-blends. There is a third site, the Red Head Vineyard, dedicated to their rarest label, He-li-an-thus. This miniscule production is reserved for the winery's mailing list, making it the hardest of Tom and Jason's wines to find. The reward is more than worth it!
It bears all the hallmarks of FUTO - elegance, purity, intensity and finesse. It stands apart for its expression of the rocky, cooler-climate site in Soda Canyon at the base of Atlas Peak, boasting some of the most alluring aromatics we've ever experienced. In the winery, Jason uses a combination of custom-made large oak barrels and clay amphorae.
