2021 Teeter-Totter, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 12x75cl

JD93
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 5% Charbano, 5% Zinfandel Vintage production: 6,000 cases Anyone who's drunk a Cabernet Sauvignon made by Benoit Touquette will know why he's... regarded as one of the greatest winemakers of his generation. With countless 100 point scores to his name, he's at the top of his game. So when he releases a Cab under his own label, it's a complete no-brainer! That makes his Teeter-Totter Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 one of the shrewdest buys from Napa, especially with Jeb Dunnuck saying "California needs more wines like this." With Teeter-Totter, Benoit gets to cherry pick fruit from his favourite vineyards throughout Napa. The result is a red that's both serious and complex, as well as delicious and moreish from the word go. In 2021, the final blend was 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the most famous and prestigious vineyards in Rutherford, with 5% each of Petite Sirah, Charbono and Zinfandel from Calistoga. It's in the classic Benoit-style with plenty of richness and opulence, with a great structure to carry it along.

Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 1,500 cases The Cabernet Sauvignons of Vice Versa have become a phenomenon, selling out in just a few... days at release each year. Spinning Plates is a the gateway to these remarkable wines, and is a true modern Napa classic. Spinning Plates is a masterful blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from some exceptional sites: the Ecotone Vineyard (formerly Abreu's Thorevilos) on the slopes of Howell Mountain above St. Helena, and the Estate Vineyard in the far north of Calistoga. These are combined with Cabernet from a handful of 'top-secret' vineyards that remain a closely guarded secret! A dash of Cabernet Franc comes from the prized vines of the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. Each release is wrapped in a stunning, unique label that was specially commissioned by owner Patrice Breton, adding to Vice Versa's striking blend of art and wine. For the 2021, the commission went to Montreal street artist “Tone”. Iinspired by Patrice’s passion for music, modern art, culture, and history, the 2021 label artwork is a retro-modern collage poster. Napa Cabs of this pedigree for under £150 are like gold dust. Patrice's characteristic, hyper-refined style has garnered multiple 100-point scores to date, and Spinning Plates is an essential for the vintage.

Blend: 100% Sauvignon Blanc Vintage production: n/a The Dry Stack Vineyard rests 170 metres above sea level on the eastern slope of Mt. Russel Bevan: "Gold...pure gold in a glass. This years Dry Stack stands apart from previous vintages in it's sophistication. It highlights the aromatic characteristics and mouth-watering flavors, while staying true to our rich, expressive, bold style of winemaking. Notes of bosc pears, melon and fresh Meyer lemon balance the dazzling acidity. Minimal french oak influence on the wine offers a hint of fresh cedar and shortbread on the finish. 2018 Clementine Carter, Larner Grenache, Santa Ynez Valley 1x75cl

JD93
Blend: 100% Grenache Vintage production: 125 cases There are two sides to Grenache: the rich, deep and peppery wines, and those driven by elegance, purity and vibrancy. One of the best exponents of... the latter, more feminine style is winemaker Sonja Magdevski and her Clementine Carter label. Perfectly described as "Pinot Noir lover's Grenache" by Jeb Dunnuck, Sonja's wines are utterly joyous and unlike anything else in our cellar. Best of all, despite vineyard production topping out at just over 300 cases, they are astonishingly well-priced. Sonja produces tiny volumes of incredible Grenache, based around some brilliant vineyards in Santa Barbara County. The Kimsey and Larner Vineyards are in Ballard Canyon, and in addition to Sonja, their fruit is sourced by some of THE greatest winemakers in California, including Jim Binns for his Andremily wines. Sonja also sources some awesome fruit in Sta. Rita Hills for her third cuvée.

2020 Saxum, Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles 1x75cl

VM93
Blend: 48% Syrah, 21% Mataro, 18% Zinfandel, 7% Graciano, 6% Tempranillo Vintage Production: 655 cases Travel just west of Paso Robles, and you will find Paderewski Vineyard: 95 acres of undulating,... steep, limestone rich hillsides within 570 rural, spring-fed acres. In the early 1900’s, this vineyard was cherished and farmed by world-renowned pianist, Polish diplomat, and vintner, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Fast forward a century and in 2004, Bill and Liz Armstrong (Epoch Estate) became the stewards of this amazing piece of property. They tasked Saxum's own Justin Smith with the mission to bring this historic vineyard back to life. Home to intense earth that bears little resemblance to typical California soils, this vineyard is filled with lean, rocky, and calcareous soil profiles. After carefully pairing the hillsides with their respective wine grape variety, the vineyard is planted with Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Grenache Blanc, and Picpoul Blanc. These vines are mostly grafted onto Phylloxera resistant Native American rootstock with the exception of a few blocks of Syrah and Grenache vines planted on their own rootstock. Creating a patchwork of vines, the vineyard’s clone selections were carefully chosen to create the perfect match between soil and vine. In addition, the vineyard blocks were meticulously laid out based on their unique exposures, soil attributes, and mesoclimates. Today, you are able to taste the synergy created by the methodical planting decisions made in 2004, as each block is happily producing fruit specific to their exact location.

2021 Mauritson Wines, Rockpile Ridge Vineyard Zinfandel, Rockpile 12x75cl

JD92
Blend: 95% Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah Vintage production: 1,057 cases Straddling the ridge between the two arms of Lake Sonoma is the Rockpile AVA. One of the newest appellations in California,... Rockpile's location and history can be described in one word: dramatic! S.P. Hallengren, great-great-great grandfather of Founder & Owner Clay Mauritson, first planted vines on the Rockpile valley floor in 1884, shipping every ounce of his wine back to Sweden. The Family's Rockpile homestead and ranch grew to 1,600 hectares by the early 1960s, when all but 280 ridgetop hectares were taken by the Army Corps of Engineers in order to develop Lake Sonoma. The vineyards shown in many of the historic family photos are now under water. It was not until the early 1990s that the first acres of modern-era vines were planted and thrived, once it was discovered that Rockpile held great potential for ultra-premium mountain fruit. What makes Rockpile so unique? The AVA is located at the Northwest edge of Dry Creek Valley where the two regions actually overlap. All the vineyards within the Rockpile AVA range from between 240-600m in elevation. Although Rockpile is located just 13 miles from the coast, Lake Sonoma provides an inversion layer that prevents the heavier fog that typically blankets other Northern California appellations, allowing for longer, more consistent sun exposure. Moisture and daytime temperatures are regulated by howling coastal breezes and, in many cases, the steep slopes and rocky terrain require non-motorised vine management. Running through Mauritson's Rockpile Ridge Vineyards is the Healdsburg–Rogers Creek Fault, a dominant earthquake fault in Northern California, and you can see why the story of Rockpile is pure geo-political drama.
