Description

*Blend: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc
*Vintage production: 2,125 cases

*Cliff Lede’s Poetry Vineyard sits in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains in Napa’s Stags Leap District AVA, and this iconic cuvée has been described by Robert Parker as “The quintessential Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon that is Napa Valley’s version of Château Margaux.”

Having averaged a breath-taking 99 points with Dunnuck and The Wine Advocate since head winemaker Christopher Tynan joined in 2012, it more than deserves this comparison.

Poetry draws its uniqueness from shallow, volcanic soils atop fractured shale. Due to the stressful nature of the site, planted with high vine density and farmed to very low yields, the vines develop slowly and produce small flavourful berries. The vineyard is planted to legendary, proprietary heritage selections of Cabernet Sauvignon.

In the cool darkness of night, grapes were hand-picked into twenty-five-pound (11.3kg) bins to minimise crushing. By early morning, the grapes were subjected to rigorous selection through a three-tiered sorting process, including an innovative optical sorter and a slow, individual berry hand sort.

Whole berries were then gently delivered by gravity to tank using a unique crane system, helping to keep the berries intact. Cold soaks lasted from five to eight days, while fermentations were managed through a combination of pump-overs and délestage. Extended maceration of up to four weeks ensured exceptional extraction and allowed for fine-tuning of tannin profiles.

Following twenty-one months of élevage in French oak barrels, 83% of which were new, the final blend was selected from the finest lots of the Poetry Vineyard.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Christopher Tynan, Director of Winemaking NR

This 2023 Poetry is wound tightly at this youthful stage, revealing immense concentration and a dense core of blackberries, cassis, and tart raspberries. Savory layers of tobacco, roasted peppers, and herbs provide heady complexity that grounds the vibrant fruit. The mouthfeel is defined by mineral tension and a distinctive powdery tannin structure that builds through the mid-palate, carrying into a finish of exceptional length and grip. While muscular now, its balance ensures a long, graceful evolution in the cellar. [Christopher Tynan, Director of Winemaking, 12/08/2026]

Decanter 98

Super refined and polished, this wine opens with lifted notes of unsmoked tobacco, ripe cassis, and black cherry, layered with blue fruit nuances and cool wet slate minerality. It s wonderfully fresh and crisp on the palate, the fruit deep and penetrating yet bright and pure. A spine of blood orange acidity brings both darkness and lift, while layers of rose petals and rose stem round out the finish. The complexity is off the charts in 2023, finishing with beautifully exotic tropical notes of guava and dried mango. The tannins are mineral-laced, superfine, and build with a crescendo through the long finish. There s plenty of length and intrigue. Rounded out with 1% Cabernet Franc. The Poetry Vineyard, carved into a steep west-facing hillside, stretches from the highest elevations of the Stags Leap District appellation down to the valley floor. Its uniqueness lies in its shallow volcanic soils atop fractured shale, planted to legendary, proprietary heritage selections of Cabernet Sauvignon. [Jonathan Cristaldi, 18/03/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2038

The Wine Palate 99

The 2023 Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon is blended of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, notes of creme de cassis and plum pudding erupt from the glass, with fragrant hints of candied violets, anise, tilled soil, and mossy tree bark, plus a waft of mint tea. The medium to full-bodied palate is fantastically bright and shimmery with super-intense black fruit and mineral layers and a firm, grainy texture, finishing with great freshness and length. Stunning. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 30/09/2025]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2050

2023 Cliff Lede, Rhythm Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District 1x75cl

JS96TWP96VM96
*Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot *Vintage production: 2,786 cases *The Rhythm Vineyard is located on the subtle slopes of Cliff Lede's Stags Leap District Estate. Defined... by two large hills at its southern border, this vineyard surrounds the winery and reaches west toward the Napa River. The Rhythm Vineyard’s soil is composed of gravelly loam of varying depths and rock content. The incredibly diverse soil profile enables us to farm several small blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and additional Bordeaux varieties with unique combinations of clonal selections and rootstocks. A healthy and generous winter rainfall season returned to Napa in 2023. A frost-free and uniform bud break was followed by steady spring weather during flowering, allowing for an even and generous fruit set. Summer conditions were moderate, with foggy mornings and cool nights, ideal for slow and steady grape maturation. The wines show exceptional balance with concentrated, ripe fruit complemented by bright acidity and supple, yet profound, structure. Optimal ripeness was achieved thanks to an early autumn of consistently warm days. The pristine ripening conditions allowed intense fruit flavour concentration. In the cool darkness of night, grapes were hand-picked into small twenty-five pound bins to minimize crushing. By early morning, the grapes were subjected to rigorous selection by a three-tiered sorting process which includes a cutting-edge optical sorter, and a slow, individual berry hand sort. The fruit was gently gravity delivered to small tanks by a unique crane system which kept the berries intact. RP95+
*Blend: 98% Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc *Vintage production: n/a *One of the most exciting and fruitful endeavours for us has been to gain exclusive access to the ‘Personal... labels’ from the legends of Napa Valley. There can be no more thrilling a wine than the Barrett & Barrett Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted by two of the most important winemakers in the region’s history. Produced in miniscule volumes, and flying well below the radar, this hidden diamond is a true insider’s secret. Barrett & Barrett was founded in 2008 by the husband-and-wife winemaking team of Bo & Heidi Barrett as their first collaborative wine, following parallel careers of more than 40 years in the wine industry. Their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon represents Bo's winegrowing experience gained over decades farming Chateau Montelena's vineyards in the Calistoga AVA, and Heidi's expertise in crafting the finest "Cult Cabernets" of Napa Valley. Her time as the inaugural winemaker for Screaming Eagle (1992-2006) and Dalla Valle Vineyards (1988-1996) is the stuff of legends, receiving multiple 100-point scores and earning moniker ‘The First Lady of Wine’.

*Blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot *Vintage production: 668 cases *The Tench Vineyard surrounds the winery in eastern Oakville at a sweet spot where the valley floor... and foothills of the Vaca Mountains collide to form some of the most complex, prized soils in Napa. Sharing a fence line with Screaming Eagle, and counting the like of Dalla Valle Vineyards and BOND’s St. Eden Vineyard as neighbours, Tench has produced an unstoppable string of high scoring wines at the hands of Russell.   For the Tench Vineyard EE Red Wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend comes from a block which brings more blue and black fruits. The addition of Cabernet Franc adds intensity and structure, and the concentration achieved is phenomenal.

JD97
*Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot *Vintage production: c.350 cases *Realm's Moonracer Estate sits on Wappo Hill near the town of Yountville. At 170 metres... above sea level, it's the highest elevation point on the valley floor. Wappo Hill was named after the Native American tribe that was prevalent in the area long before California was a state. The Wappos believed in Animism, a spiritual idea that all the elements of the natural environment have a soul. The Moonracer name and label are an oblique reference to the earliest inhabitants of the place Realm now calls home. The Cabernet Sauvignon-based Moonracer is composed of the finest lots from the Estate vineyard. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has much to choose from, as the site, with its multiple blocks, elevations, facings and diverse soils, has character in spades. Moonracer bears the unmistakable mark of this stimulating vineyard as well as the Stags Leap District. The wine is strong and powerful yet elegant, with refined tannins and plenty of depth. It beautifully combines characteristics typical of northern and southern Napa Valley. For the label, Barcelona-based artist Sergio Albiac inserts data taken from weather stations at the Moonracer vineyard, including temperature, wind, and solar radiation, into an algorithm that produces abstract images based on the data. Each vintage of Moonracer is represented by data from that particular year, and each label is unique.
