The Tempest was one of the first wines, and the first Proprietary Blend, produced by Realm Cellars. At the time, it seemed almost uncanny that they were able to access three grape varietals at the same time from the same vineyard; it was blind luck or perhaps the proverbial “perfect storm.”
The resulting wine reflected a fierce determination to brave the storm as well as a new desire to realise the possibilities of Merlot.
Fruit for The Tempest is sourced from the cooler-climate Oak Knoll and Coombsville AVAs in the south of Napa. By building The Tempest 2021 around a core of fruit from Realm’s world class Farella Vineyard, Coombsville’s greatest site, their decision has paid off big time with the most elegant, pure and structured vintage we’ve tried to date.
Having worked with this historic site (formerly a component of Opus One) since 2003, and farming it themselves for many years, the Realm Cellars team knows it better than anyone. With the switch from ‘tenants’ to owners, it’s now a certainly that this stunning new iteration of The Tempest is the blueprint for the Napa Merlot by which all others will be measured.
To signify this change in direct from The Tempest, and new label was commissioned to U.K. artist Richard Twose. Twose works in the tradition of non-finito, where the artwork is carried only to a point, leaving observers to fill in the rest for themselves. This technique resonates with Realm, where the feeling is that wine is an art form that invites participation, allowing wine lovers to attach their own memories to each bottle.
