Tasting Notes

Jeb Dunnuck 99

While this cuvée is one of the least expensive in the lineup, it’s often one of my favorites. The 2018 Ontogeny is no exception and should be snatched up by readers. A classic 2018 nose of ripe, pure blue fruits, cassis, violets, and smoked earth gives way to a full-bodied, dense, concentrated Cabernet with beautiful tannins and length. It’s going to evolve for 20 years or more. [27/01/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2021-2043

2016 Cliff Lede, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District 1x75cl

    JS93RP93
Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 6,720 cases Cliff Lede's iconic Cabernet is the essence of the Estate's Stags Leap District... terroir in a glass. The fruit is sourced from the hillside terraces of the 'Grand Cru' Poetry Vineyard, the Twin Peaks Vineyard estate surrounding the winery, and a few neighbouring vineyards in the Stags Leap District. The wine is composed of small lots from the best blocks, representing a diverse range of carefully selected clones and rootstocks. From Poetry’s exposed, rocky terraces boasting volcanic origins, to the ancient riverbed alluvial soils of Twin Peaks, the breadth of contributing sites translates into a wine of impressive complexity and longevity.

    2019 Teeter-Totter, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 1x75cl

    JD94
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 5% Charbano, 5% Zinfandel Vintage production: n/a Anyone who's drunk a Cabernet Sauvignon made by Benoit Touqette will know why he's regarded as one... of the greatest winemakers of his generation. With countless 100 point scores at Realm Cellars for The Bard, The Absurd, Moonracer Estate, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane and Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernets, he's at the top of his game. So when he releases a Cab under his own label, it's a complete no-brainer! That makes his Teeter-Totter Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 one of the shrewdest buys from Napa, especially with Jeb Dunnuck saying "It tastes as if it costs two to three times the price." With Teeter-Totter, Benoit gets to cherry pick fruit from his favourite vineyards throughout Napa. The result is a red that's both serious and complex, as well as delicious and moreish from the word go. Benoit described 2019 as a "100% drool-worthy vintage", and his final blend was 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from St Helena, Yountville and Rutherford; 5% each of Petite Sirah, Charbono and Zinfandel from Calistoga. It's in the classic Benoit-style with plenty of richness and opulence, with a great structure to carry it along.

2020 Aperture, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 1x75cl

    JD97RP96
Blend: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, 1% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot Vintage production: 2,033 cases Few wines can boast such a balance of complexity and depth with a style that... is guaranteed to put a huge smile on the faces of everyone who drinks them. You can lay back and enjoy the experience just as much as you can admire the craftsmanship that went into making them. Fruit for the Cabernet comes from the Del Rio, Oliver Ranch, SJ Ranch, and 1912 Estate Vineyards. They are celebrated in their own rights with Aperture's single-vineyard programme, but come together irresistibly in the Cabernet Sauvignon 2020.
