Single-Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc

A Stunning Duo from the Epic 2023 Vintage

-

Arkenstone Estate - Napa Valley (98pts)

Dragonette Cellars - Santa Barbara County (96pts)

“I’d happily put this in a blind lineup with
the best Bordeaux Blanc out there.”

Jeb Dunnuck

Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay may hog the limelight, and for those in the know the eclectic white Rhône-varietal blends are gold dust, but California's real treat is Sauvignon Blanc!

From the forested slopes of Napa to the high mountain plains of Santa Barbara County, the quality of Californian Sauvignon Blanc has never been higher, and the expressions produced on the very best terroirs are truly world-class.

Our two favourite producers are 300 miles apart, and their Sauvignon Blancs both stand as benchmarks for their respective regions: Arkenstone Estate on Napa's Howell Mountain, and Dragonette Cellars from Santa Barbara's Happy Canyon.

Winemakers Sam Kaplan (Arkenstone) and Brandon Sparks-Gillis (Dragonette) have both taken inspiration from the age-worthy examples at the greatest Châteaux of Bordeaux, combining centuries of knowledge with a modern approach. They have captured the very essence of two magnificent Vineyards.

Arkenstone's single block of Sauvignon Blanc lies in a hidden corner of the Estate at 500m above sea level. The cooler climate and rare white tufa (decomposed volcanic ash) soils give the wine vibrancy and boundless energy, while judicious use of the best French oak brings depth, texture, and the all important cellaring potential.

Their earliest vintages are still flying, with the 2013 recently picking up 98 points and earmarked to drink for another couple of decades! The newly-released 2023 Blanc is arguably their best to date, picking up the same score straight off the bat, and will continue to evolve beautifully.

The Vogelzang Vineyard  sits at the end of a 40 miles geological funnel that draws the cooling Pacific coastal fog inland, which combines with gravelly soils to create a mini-nirvana for Sauvignon Blanc.

Brandon selects a special blend of French barriques, including a Dagueneau-inspired Cigar barrel, keeping the wine on its lees for 18 months to add even more complexity. Bright with tension and energy, it's regularly been cited as the Central Coast's best Sauvignon Blanc by leading critic Jeb Dunnuck.

The brand-new 2023 Vogelzang is the best to date: "I’d happily put this in a blind lineup with the best Bordeaux Blanc." (JD)

2023 Arkenstone, Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Howell Mountain 6x75cl

DE97JS98TWP98
*Blend: 93% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Sémillon *Vintage production: 450 cases *Equal to the Estate Red, the Estate Sauvignon Blanc is done in the Bordeaux style of winemaking, including a small... percentage of Sémillon in the final blend. As with many Bordeaux Châteaux, Arkenstone utilises large concrete eggs for the vinification as well as new and once-used French oak. The free-run Sauvignon Blanc is fermented and aged in oak and concrete vessels for roughly a year sur-lie and without racking or battonage. The Semillon is fermented and aged sur-lie for the same time but in all-new French oak. Once blended, the Estate Blanc is then aged in bottle for 18 months before release. The Wine Balance, structure, and texture are at the core of the Estate Blanc. This foundation makes it quite versatile at the dinner table. From raw seafood to hearty pork dishes, the combination of rich fruit and bright acidity makes it a perfect match. Though easy to enjoy, the Estate Blanc is more intellectual than it is quaffable. Whereas most Sauvignon Blanc blends are meant to be enjoyed for the prelude to an evening, Arkenstone’s has the integrity to last from amuse-bouche to the final dessert of a lengthy meal. Howell Mountain is composed primarily of volcanic soils. At Arkenstone, the vines are planted in red Aiken Loam and White Tufa. The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are planted in the Tufa, comprised of compacted volcanic ash, and are 100% organically grown.

*Blend: 100% Sauvignon Blanc *Vintage production: 350 cases *Framed by the San Raphael Mountains to the east and Santa Ynez Mountains to the south, Happy Canyon is blessed with an extraordinary... terroir. It's sits at the end of a 40 miles geological funnel that draws the cooling Pacific coastal fog inland, which combines with the gravelly soils of the Vogelzang Vineyard to create a mini-nirvana for Sauvignon Blanc. The finest wine from Vogelzang is produced by the team at Dragonette Cellars who, in the words of Jeb Dunnuck, make "Some of the finest expressions of Sauvignon coming out of the Central Coast today." It's made with a nod to the great Sauvignon Blancs of the world, with fermentation in 228L and 276L French oak barrels (18% new), and 300L Dagueneau-inspired Cigar French oak barrels. 17 months of the lees bring added layers to a finished wine bright with tension and energy.
