This week we're setting up camp in California's Central Coast as we make our annual trip to catch up with our partner wineries throughout Paso Robles and Santa Barbara.

We'll be bringing you exclusive daily news and live offers as we taste the newest releases, and talk to the people behind them. We will be reporting on our first visits to some of the most exciting new producers.

We want everyone to be a part of this trip so if you've any questions for us or any of our winemakers please don't hesitate to send them over. With budbreak just around the corner, this is a great chance to pick the brains of California's finest at the most exciting time of year.

2019 Saxum, Somnus, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD96-98
Blend: 33% Petite Sirah, 33% Syrah, 17% Graciano, 13% Touriga Nacional, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 610 cases A brand-new cuvée, we tasted the Somnus 2019 from barrel in 2022 (it was... simply label ‘XC’ for extended cellared), and even at that relatively early stage it was a mind-blowing experience. Our notes read: “Off the charts – this will be incredible!”, which almost feels like an understatement now. Named after the Greek God of Sleep, Somnus slumbered for an almost unheard of 44 months in barrel to tame the insane level of power and intensity, and Justin’s judgement was impeccable as it came together beautifully in time for bottling. For Saxum fans, this is as thrilling as it gets! NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “I finally get to introduce you to this new cuvée, Somnus, named after the Roman god of sleep, because this wine gets to sleep an extra year in barrel! 44 months it’s been slumbering away. Back in 2019 we had a couple of amazing lots in our cellar that were so unique, and so incredible, I really wanted to showcase them. The problem was they were also extremely structured. The original plan was to give them the 33 month elevage like Bone Rock and Rocket block, but when it came time to bottle it last year it was still too beastly. Think velvet glove in a iron gauntlet. We tucked it back in and let it sleep another whole year, and when it woke up this time, it blew us all away. It is something unique for sure. Still a beast, but something very special. Something that I believe could only happen here on the Central Coast. It is another wine in this line up that has to be tasted to be believed, but understand, it’s not for the faint of heart. It is Paso.”

2021 Saxum, James Berry Vineyard White, Paso Robles 1x75cl

Blend: 44% Grenache Blanc, 29% Roussanne, 20% Chenin Blanc, 7% Chardonnay Vintage production: 347 cases The James Berry White stands as Saxum’s rarest cuvée and has garnered a cult-flowing among... Saxum aficionados. For us, the Grenache Blanc in Paso Robles is the best in the world, so it goes without saying that Justin’s is going to sit at the top of the tree! Always and eclectic blend, this is a rich and deep wine that shimmers with energy throughout. NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “I like to think that we are getting better and better at making this wine, or maybe our Grenache Blanc vines are producing better and better fruit, or maybe its just that ’21 was an exceptional year for whites. Whatever the reasons, I’m really enjoying our one and only white. (News flash, we have planted a couple small blocks of whites up at our new York Mountain planting, but that is 6 years away from any release.) If you have enjoyed our past whites I think you will like this one even better. Brought up in huge 600L demi-muid barrels, with 4 of the 6 being new, it spent a full 22 months on its lees before racking clean and bottling. It is full and rich, yet bright and lively. The magical combo I always look for in a white…actually in any wine really.”

2021 Saxum, James Berry, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD95-97+
Blend: 53% Grenache, 31% Mataro, 6% Syrah, 6% Counoise, 4% Carignan Vintage production: 1,390 cases Saxum's James Berry Vineyard, planted by Justin's father, James Berry Smith, in the 1980s, is... renowned throughout California as a true ‘Grand Cru’, and the James Berry Red 2021 is dominated by Grenache of the highest order. This is a hugely energetic and almost ethereal expression of the vineyard, and looks set to be one of the longest lived vintages to date. NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “When we tasted the wines side by side to write these notes (I know, hard life!), Heather and I were struck by how elevated this wine was. Yes, it’s the only Grenache led wine in this Syrah dominated release, but it was just singing! These ‘21s have really snuck up on me. I have to admit that early in their lives I found them a little boring for lack of a better term. I now realize they were just late bloomers and their hidden charms are just now blossoming into something quite magical. They carry a weightlessness while simultaneously jam packed with so much substance. Does that even make sense? Anyways, I love them. I could throw some tasting notes out to you about this wine, but really you just have to taste it to understand what I’m trying to convey. It’s good.”

2021 Saxum, Heart Stone Vineyard, Central Coast 1x75cl

JD95-97
Blend: 31% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 21% Graciano, 17% Mataro, 3% Petite Sirah Vintage production: 751 cases The Heart Stone Vineyard 2021 is from a site exclusive to Saxum Vineyards. It’s a remarkable... ‘Paso Blend’ based around a core of Grenache, Syrah, Graciano, and Mataro, both lifted and energetic with darker tones of roasted sage and fennel. Dunnuck loves it for being “Layered, silky, and opulent.”

2021 Saxum, Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD97
Blend: 48% Syrah, 19% Mataro, 17% Zinfandel, 9% Tempranillo, 7% Graciano Vintage production: 539 cases Travel just west of Paso Robles, and you will find Paderewski Vineyard: 95 acres of undulating,... steep, limestone rich hillsides within 570 rural, spring-fed acres. In the early 1900’s, this vineyard was cherished and farmed by world-renowned pianist, Polish diplomat, and vintner, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Fast forward a century and in 2004, Bill and Liz Armstrong (Epoch Estate) became the stewards of this amazing piece of property. They tasked Saxum's own Justin Smith with the mission to bring this historic vineyard back to life. Home to intense earth that bears little resemblance to typical California soils, this vineyard is filled with lean, rocky, and calcareous soil profiles. After carefully pairing the hillsides with their respective wine grape variety, the vineyard is planted with Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Grenache Blanc, and Picpoul Blanc. These vines are mostly grafted onto Phylloxera resistant Native American rootstock with the exception of a few blocks of Syrah and Grenache vines planted on their own rootstock. Creating a patchwork of vines, the vineyard’s clone selections were carefully chosen to create the perfect match between soil and vine. In addition, the vineyard blocks were meticulously laid out based on their unique exposures, soil attributes, and mesoclimates. Today, you are able to taste the synergy created by the methodical planting decisions made in 2004, as each block is happily producing fruit specific to their exact location.

2017 Haliotide, Stolo Vineyard Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged, San Luis Obispo Coast 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 40 cases Disgorged: February 2024 When we heard about a Sparkling Wine producer from the very edges of the San Luis Obispo coastline, we just had to find... out. We met owners Nicole and Lucas at their boutique winery in the gorgeous hills just south of Paso. Nicole's winemaking experience of working at cooler-climate coastal sites, and Lucas's knowledge as one of Paso's most in-demand vineyard managers, makes them the dream team. Inspired by the great cuvées of Champagne, they adopted more of a 'Grower Champagne' approach by focusing on two exceptional vineyards (Stolo and Topotero) just a couple of miles from the ocean. This bracing environment produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of tension and acidity, but it's the California sunshine that gives them an extra dimension. Nicole and Lucas make three cuvées: the Extra-Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from Topotero and given 30 months tirage; a razor-sharp Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay from Stolo) that sees 4 years on its lees; and a beautifully-textured BdB Late-Disgorgement that sees around 6.5 years tirage. All wines are barrel-fermented, and the results are pure class. For us, they would sit admirably alongside some of the world's top Fizz, but it's more telling that every winemaker we spoke with was on Haliotide's allocation list (waiting list, for a few!), and ranked the wines as the best Sparkling Wines of North America. With just a couple of hundred cases made, there's only one course-of action: reserve some bottles now and find out for yourself why the hype is more than justified!

2021 Dragonette, Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 1x75cl

JD94JS96RP94VM96
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 350 cases Historic Sanford & Benedict is the original Pinot Noir vineyard (est. 1971) in the Santa Ynez Valley (Sta. Rita Hills was not established until... 2001), and it has been the inspiration for winemakers for ever since. Originally planted to a selection of apparently secret “heritage” clones (subsequently expanded and replanted over the years), this magical site simply buzzes with cosmic energy. Dragonette purchases fruit here from two distinct blocks of older vines (1999) and oldest vines (1972), buying by the acre so they may employ specialized organic farming practices. These stately vines stand tall on their enormous trunks, while still producing a solid crop of beautifully concentrated grapes. The resulting wines display sappy red and black cherry fruits with old-vine style and grace.

2021 Andremily, No. 10 Syrah, California 1x75cl

JD97-100RP97+WI96-98
Blend: 93% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 2% Viognier Vintage production: 900 cases The Andremily Syrah No. 10 2021 is a particularly special and poignant vintage for Jim Binns as it’s the 10th vintage of... Andremily, which began with the No. 1 Syrah 2012. It’s a vintage worthy of such a celebration, boasting a beautifully warm (but never hot) season and dry conditions, resulting in gorgeous small bunches which had time to mature slowly on the vines to add even more complexity. It is a masterpiece that “is going to flirt with perfection at maturity” in the eyes of Jeb Dununck (97-100pts). Jim’s own description is worth the admission alone: “This sultry temptress is sure to please with its soaring aromatics and rich full texture. It must be tasted to be believed.” It’s built around of core of Syrah from a line-up of top sites throughout the Central Coast, including White Hawk (Cat Canyon), Larner (Ballard Canyon), Harrison-Clarke (Ballard Canyon), Kimsey, and Alta Mesa (Santa Barbara County), and Slide Hill - Andremily’s first Estate Vineyard, in Edna Valley.

2021 Dragonette, Rita’s Crown Vineyard Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills 1x75cl

JD95VM97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage Production: 330 cases One of the producers at the forefront of Sta. Rita's Hills' success is Dragonette Cellars. Winemaker Brandon Sparks-Gills, and brothers Steve and... John Dragonette, select the region's elite vineyards to make Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of utter refinement and distinction. Rita’s Crown vineyard is located at one of the highest points in the Sta. Rita Hills, adjacent to such famous sites as Mt Carmel and Sea Smoke. The soils are a mix of sandy and clay loams with a good amount of diatomaceous earth. Dragonette's Chardonnay comes from two parcels: block 16, (clone 76) lies at 800-950 feet on a steep, west-southwest facing hillside above the monastery, and block 12 (clone 95), a steep south facing hillside just below and to the west. These higher elevation blocks are exposed to fog and clouds most mornings and high winds most afternoons, cooling the vineyard. The climate and the low vigour soils produce a small canopy, small yields and a long, slow growing season. The wines here typically show beautiful, ripe tropical fruit flavours, balanced by remarkable acidity and strong notes of chalky minerals.
