The Diamond Mountain AVA, a sub-appellation of the Napa Valley AVA, is located in the northwestern part of Napa County. It extends into the eastern side of the Mayacamas Mountains, southeast of Calistoga, and is named for the abundant obsidian and volcanic glass found in its volcanic soils.

The higher elevation of the Diamond Mountain District AVA provides a climate advantage, experiencing less extreme heat compared to the valley floor and generally remaining frost-free in winter. Although situated in the warmer northern end of Napa Valley, the Diamond Creek river drainage allows cool air to flow through the hillside. This cool air prolongs the growing season and mitigates late-season heat spikes. Additionally, most vineyards are east-facing, offering protection from the hot afternoon sun. These conditions, combined with the elevation and lean soils, result in powerful, ripe wines with robust tannins and bright acidity.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape variety in this region. The soils, primarily volcanic in origin, are not as red as those found elsewhere in the valley. Similar to Mount Veeder, much of Diamond Mountain's terrain is too rugged for cultivation, leaving most of the area covered in dense redwood forests.
