On the palate it's so good up front, loads of vintage expression with energy and power, a lovely texture of crunchy tannins, an almost salty minerality, and a great finish. 2022 Realm Cellars, Fidelio Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 1x75cl

Blend: 100% Sauvignon Blanc Production: 500 cases Realm Cellars' unerring dedication to perfection has seen their portfolio of Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons reach true 'Napa First Growth'... status. From Beckstoffer Dr. Crane to Moonracer, they are some of the Valley's elite wines and as collectible as it gets. There is one Single-Vineyard wine at Realm Cellars that stands apart for being the rarest of them all (only 500 cases produced), and representing the Estate's only white cuvée - Realm Cellars Fidelio Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is sourced from Realm's Farella Estate Vineyard in Coombsville. Winemaker Benoit Touquete used three different vessels (and materials) to age Fidelio – demi-muid neutral oak barrels, concrete eggs, and terracotta amphoras. Each vessel contributes to Fidelio’s unique layers, complexities, and depth. Benoit thinks the Fidelio 2022 has the freshness of Dagueneau and the richness of Château Mouton-Rothschild's Ygrec - the best of both worlds, and we thoroughly agree. It is a wine that captures perfectly the ethos of Realm – richness and freshness, at the same time.

Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: n/a Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is the even rockier neighbour of Dr. Crane, nestled at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. Large rocks and... pebbles sit on the surface and continue below to create a tough environment for the vines, encouraging them to produce exceptional fruit. We’ve heard many a winemaker cite this as their favourite vineyard, and it’s not hard to see why with the big scores quickly racking up. Four Corners Wine “What – a – nose! Brilliant, just gorgeous, with lots of hot gravel, a lovely hint of reduction, a really intense fruit core dominated by pure blackcurrant. The palate is gorgeous, sublime, a brilliant Las Piedras. Bags of minerality and energy surround the most amazing dark fruit, with oh-so juicy tannins. It’s a big Cabernet, and an absolutely phenomenal one.” (Sep. 2023)

2021 Amuse Bouche, Red Blend, Napa Valley 6x75cl

Blend: 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc Vintage production: 600 cases Legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett and vintner John Schwartz started Amuse Bouche in 2002, taking inspiration from their shared... love of the great Châteaux of Pomerol to produce a Napa Merlot of elegance, poise and refinement that would deliver in spades at release while retaining great cellaring potential. The fruit comes from the secretive Amuse Bouche vineyards, hidden in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains above Napa's Rutherford AVA. They have the perfect combination of clay, gravel and volcanic soils, giving the Amuse Bouche its unmistakable complexity and structure. Four Corners Wine: "The concentrated, guarded and highly exciting aromatics here promise wonders and delights to come, with underlying layers of delicate milk chocolate and a dusting of cocoa adding to the intrigue. It's closed at this early stage, but there's going to be a lot to enjoy with a bit of time in bottle. The palate is led by a gorgeous texture with supple and refined tannins and a bright, lifted and joyous energy. The fruit is crisp, crunchy, beautifully defined and extremely moreish. This elegant, feminine Merlot is a thing of beauty and while it's early days, there's boundless promised of great things to come." (Sep. 2023)

2021 Saxum, James Berry, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD95-97+
Blend: 53% Grenache, 31% Mataro, 6% Syrah, 6% Counoise, 4% Carignan Vintage production: 1,390 cases Saxum's James Berry Vineyard, planted by Justin's father, James Berry Smith, in the 1980s, is... renowned throughout California as a true ‘Grand Cru’, and the James Berry Red 2021 is dominated by Grenache of the highest order. This is a hugely energetic and almost ethereal expression of the vineyard, and looks set to be one of the longest lived vintages to date. NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “When we tasted the wines side by side to write these notes (I know, hard life!), Heather and I were struck by how elevated this wine was. Yes, it’s the only Grenache led wine in this Syrah dominated release, but it was just singing! These ‘21s have really snuck up on me. I have to admit that early in their lives I found them a little boring for lack of a better term. I now realize they were just late bloomers and their hidden charms are just now blossoming into something quite magical. They carry a weightlessness while simultaneously jam packed with so much substance. Does that even make sense? Anyways, I love them. I could throw some tasting notes out to you about this wine, but really you just have to taste it to understand what I’m trying to convey. It’s good.”

2019 Saxum, Somnus, Paso Robles 1x75cl

JD96-98
Blend: 33% Petite Sirah, 33% Syrah, 17% Graciano, 13% Touriga Nacional, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 610 cases A brand-new cuvée, we tasted the Somnus 2019 from barrel in 2022 (it was... simply label ‘XC’ for extended cellared), and even at that relatively early stage it was a mind-blowing experience. Our notes read: “Off the charts – this will be incredible!”, which almost feels like an understatement now. Named after the Greek God of Sleep, Somnus slumbered for an almost unheard of 44 months in barrel to tame the insane level of power and intensity, and Justin’s judgement was impeccable as it came together beautifully in time for bottling. For Saxum fans, this is as thrilling as it gets! NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “I finally get to introduce you to this new cuvée, Somnus, named after the Roman god of sleep, because this wine gets to sleep an extra year in barrel! 44 months it’s been slumbering away. Back in 2019 we had a couple of amazing lots in our cellar that were so unique, and so incredible, I really wanted to showcase them. The problem was they were also extremely structured. The original plan was to give them the 33 month elevage like Bone Rock and Rocket block, but when it came time to bottle it last year it was still too beastly. Think velvet glove in a iron gauntlet. We tucked it back in and let it sleep another whole year, and when it woke up this time, it blew us all away. It is something unique for sure. Still a beast, but something very special. Something that I believe could only happen here on the Central Coast. It is another wine in this line up that has to be tasted to be believed, but understand, it’s not for the faint of heart. It is Paso.”

2021 Saxum, James Berry Vineyard White, Paso Robles 1x75cl

Blend: 44% Grenache Blanc, 29% Roussanne, 20% Chenin Blanc, 7% Chardonnay Vintage production: 347 cases The James Berry White stands as Saxum’s rarest cuvée and has garnered a cult-flowing among... Saxum aficionados. For us, the Grenache Blanc in Paso Robles is the best in the world, so it goes without saying that Justin’s is going to sit at the top of the tree! Always and eclectic blend, this is a rich and deep wine that shimmers with energy throughout. NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JUSTIN SMITH: “I like to think that we are getting better and better at making this wine, or maybe our Grenache Blanc vines are producing better and better fruit, or maybe its just that ’21 was an exceptional year for whites. Whatever the reasons, I’m really enjoying our one and only white. (News flash, we have planted a couple small blocks of whites up at our new York Mountain planting, but that is 6 years away from any release.) If you have enjoyed our past whites I think you will like this one even better. Brought up in huge 600L demi-muid barrels, with 4 of the 6 being new, it spent a full 22 months on its lees before racking clean and bottling. It is full and rich, yet bright and lively. The magical combo I always look for in a white…actually in any wine really.”

Noir 2019. It's a blend like no-other: with a dominance of Syrah and addition of Grenache it is a classic Central Coast recipe, but what makes it unique and utterly divine is a splash of Pinot Noir, all from the Estate Vineyards! Peake Ranch's wines are super hot-tickets, and the two Estate Vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills are highly prized by the region's top winemakers. The Peake Ranch Vineyard surrounds the winery in the far southeast of the AVA, counting Sine Qua Non's Eleven Confessions Vineyard as a neighbour. This historic site rises up from the valley floor into Santa Rosa Hills, a is home to some of the best Pinot Noir on the West Coast. John Sebastiano Vineyard has the perfect mix of cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean and Californian sunshine for producing amazing Syrah and Grenache. With the likes of Jim Binns (Andremily), Paul Lato (Paul Lato Wines), and Nik Krankl (Finger's Crossed) lining up for some fruit, it deserves it's 'Grand Cru' status. 2021 Dragonette, Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 1x75cl

JD94JS96RP94VM96
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 350 cases Historic Sanford & Benedict is the original Pinot Noir vineyard (est. 1971) in the Santa Ynez Valley (Sta. Rita Hills was not established until... 2001), and it has been the inspiration for winemakers for ever since. Originally planted to a selection of apparently secret “heritage” clones (subsequently expanded and replanted over the years), this magical site simply buzzes with cosmic energy. Dragonette purchases fruit here from two distinct blocks of older vines (1999) and oldest vines (1972), buying by the acre so they may employ specialized organic farming practices. These stately vines stand tall on their enormous trunks, while still producing a solid crop of beautifully concentrated grapes. The resulting wines display sappy red and black cherry fruits with old-vine style and grace.

2018 Dragonette, Duvarita Vineyard Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County 1x75cl

JD94
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage Production: 145 cases The Duvarita Vineyard is in the far west of the region, sitting literally metres outside of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA boundary, and it is one of... the most sought after vineyards. The steep slopes sit on a combination of ancient sand dunes and sandstone, producing wines of characteristic depth and intensity. Dragonette's Chardonnay comes from the highest blocks, more influenced by the cooling Pacific fog and full of stone fruit and a crisp minerality, and we love the extra dimension on the palate that comes from lees contact. For some summer-dining inspiration, the regional seafood specialties are the famous local halibut and sea bass, either (or both!) of which are perfect with a glass of Duvarita Chardonnay.

2021 Dragonette, Rita’s Crown Vineyard Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills 1x75cl

JD95VM97
Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage Production: 330 cases One of the producers at the forefront of Sta. Rita's Hills' success is Dragonette Cellars. Winemaker Brandon Sparks-Gills, and brothers Steve and... John Dragonette, select the region's elite vineyards to make Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of utter refinement and distinction. Rita’s Crown vineyard is located at one of the highest points in the Sta. Rita Hills, adjacent to such famous sites as Mt Carmel and Sea Smoke. The soils are a mix of sandy and clay loams with a good amount of diatomaceous earth. Dragonette's Chardonnay comes from two parcels: block 16, (clone 76) lies at 800-950 feet on a steep, west-southwest facing hillside above the monastery, and block 12 (clone 95), a steep south facing hillside just below and to the west. These higher elevation blocks are exposed to fog and clouds most mornings and high winds most afternoons, cooling the vineyard. The climate and the low vigour soils produce a small canopy, small yields and a long, slow growing season. The wines here typically show beautiful, ripe tropical fruit flavours, balanced by remarkable acidity and strong notes of chalky minerals.

2022 MAXEM, Silver Eagle Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast 12x75cl

Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Vintage production: 300 cases MAXEM is all about precision, ultra-focused winemaking, and celebrating the finest terroir of the Sonoma Coast at the hands of winemaker Sam... Kaplan. The wines are elegant, pure, remarkably balanced wines loaded with tension and energy, that have knocked us off our seats every time we've tasted them. They're as close in class to the Grand Crus of Burgundy we've ever experienced in California, while maintaining their unmistakable Sonoma DNA. Silver Eagle Vineyard rests atop Stoetz Ridge, the land mass that divides the remote Sonoma Coast from the Russian River Valley. This vineyard experiences both the cooling ocean breezes of the nearby Pacific, as well as the warmth of the interior valley. The Pinot Noir made from this unique confluence of climates is extraordinary: a rare balance of explosive wild berry, mouth-watering acidity, and rich, polished tannins. Four Corners Wine: "Fantastic from the outset - so refined on the nose, super concentrated with a core full of gorgeous top notes of grilled herbs and dried meadow flowers, a great streak of savoury earthiness, almost a touch of white truffle. Complex and delicious. The palate is stunning, showing real depth, intensity, and tension. The structure and texture are great, filled with darker berries and great acidity. Lovely purity and great a great profile and sense of balance. Powerful, yet a Pinot of total grace. Gorgeous." (Sept. 2023)

2021 MAXEM, U.V. Lucky Well Vineyard Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast 12x75cl

Blend: 100% Chardonnay Vintage production: 130 cases MAXEM is all about precision, ultra-focused winemaking, and celebrating the finest terroir of the Sonoma Coast at the hands of winemaker Sam... 2021 is MAXEM's first ever vintage from the legendary U.V. Lucky Well Vineyard . This site sits atop a knoll on the western edge of the Sebastopol hills outside of the towns of Graton and Sebastopol. The area is home to some of the most highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in the Russian River Valley due in large part to the perfect confluence of soil, climate, and elevation. The vineyard is in an area often referred to as the “banana belt” of the Russian River Valley because, though on the very coolest, foggiest, and western edge of the appellation, it sits on a knoll that rises above the fog line. This feature exposes the fruit to more gentle sunlight, which allows very slow and even ripening across the entire growing season. Four Corners Wine: "This debut release of U.V. Lucky Well Chardonnay is sublime. There's a beautiful note of reduction on the nose bringing notes a struck flint, leading to aromas of dried tarragon, an insane level of minerality, and a sense of ultra-purity. So impressive. The palate is just amazing, with so much concentration and energy, and phenomenal energy. It's all about texture, minerality, with laser-focused fruit. Simply brilliant - epic." (Sept. 2023)

RP98
Blend: 65% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage production: 580 cases The Farrow Ranch vineyard is a unique and distinctive site with two incredible blocks of terroir worthy of adding to the Devil... Proof portfolio. This special wine is a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, making it's debut in 2021. Winemaker Jesse Katz (Aperture) carefully selected individual vines from these blocks to contribute to this blend. Each vine is hand harvested and brought into the winery within hours of being picked. The clusters are methodically and obsessively sorted down to the individual berry. Each vineyard block is separated and will cold soak for 5 days with minimal air incorporation, allowing for optimal extraction, flowed by cooler fermentations with native yeast. Oxygen and temperature are controlled throughout the 21-day fermentation and extended maceration is determined lot by lot as we walk the fine line of full extraction and elegant, silky textures. The Cima Ladera 2021 went through malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and are aged (sur-lees) for 22 months.

#Newsflash | “Postcard from California: ‘Visitors are toasting their new found freedoms’

There’s a festive atmosphere in Napa and Sonoma, where tourists are back and Covid rules are set to be dropped.” We were thrilled to read Matt Villano’s article in @thetimes over the weekend, and the news that tourism officials say visitor numbers to #Napa and #Sonoma are at their highest since the pandemic started, up by as much as 230 per cent in some parts of the region. If tickets to the three-day music festival “BottleRock”, which will include headliners from Stevie Nicks and the Foo Fighters, selling out in an hour is anything to go by, all signs are pointing to a super summer ahead.
